Blue/Black screen after installing graphics card

Hi,

 

I bought a cheap AMD Radeon R7 on ebay, to make an older HP 3500 pro run Zwift more easily and have HDMI & DP output. However, everything works fine until I try to install the graphics driver. I tried it on both Windows 7 and Windows 10 and even on Linux (Manjaro). As soon as I install the appropriate driver, I end up with a blue screen on Windows (black screen on Linux). With the basic drivers only everything seems to work fine.

 

I don't know the pc's motherboard, it is HP branded with a locked bios menu (just able to change boot order here). CPU is a Core i5-3470. I have 8gb DDR-3 RAM installed and a 450 watt power supply.
I am not sure, but I think it has only PCIe 2.0 instead of PCIe 3.0, which the card requires - could this cause the trouble?

Next weekend I may be able to test the card on a Foxconn A67ML-K 3.0 AM3 board with an AMD Phenom II X4 955. Until then, I try to collect all tips and tricks.

nah the gpu probably just dead. the machine is new enough for it and with 3 os's you've probably ruled out software issues

Ok, seems obvious. But how is it working without drivers installed? Is it just used as pass-thru output?
I'm just curious about it.
