How to know you're actually getting USB 3 speed?

I'm doing some mass transfers from our Plex media server to my PC to clean up music tags, and it really feels like I'm not getting full speed. Win7 is reporting that I'm getting 40-50 MB/sec, but based on other results online it seems like it should be ~100-120.

Relevant info;

MB is a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3

CPU is FX-8350

External HDD is a Kingwin... something. It doesn't seem to have a model number, but the enclosure boasts Super-Speed USB 3.0.

I'm using a super-speed USB 3 cable, plugged into the USb 3 port of my MB.

I don't know if my drivers aren't installed right, if I'm misreading something, or if the HDD is having a bottleneck, but I'm only transferring at USB 2 speeds from what I can gather. This link shows USB 3 on a 7200 HDD as capable of 110 MB/sec.

What does crystal disk mark or other disk benchmarks show? If your doing random io, a hdd will get much less than that 100-120mB/s

I... don't know what those are.

I've never seem a hard drive actually max out the bus speed of usb without it being small bits of data or the same file over and over. If it's just a mass file dump from one to the other then yeah it'll go slow

That's the external HDD

This is the drive it's copying to

Which seems odd that it's so slow, considering it's directly connected by SATA to the MOBO.

What model of drive, it is a 500gb so its proably older and slower

That particular drive I'm not sure. That was a spare we had around so I stuck it in, but pretty sure it'd be a 7200. The other drives I have are WD black 7200 500GB and they're only slightly faster. My C drive is an SSD, which is obviously significantly faster.
