Getting the best resolution and refresh rate out of my 4K TV

Hey all,

I am currently looking at a 4K TV, specifically the 55" Samsung Q6FN

link here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L6T3QNQ/?coliid=IZ0XS38BTGAHL&colid=2BRF81TYC0FFQ&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

I have a 2019 MSI GS65 Stealth, which has an HDMI port (can't find if it's HDMI 2.0), a mini DP, and a Thunderbolt 3 port.

The TV is capable of running 4K at 120hz, and I'm curious which port and adapter I should be using to ensure the best resolution out of my TV. I figured the mini DP to an HDMI cable would work well, but I'm not sure if DP 1.4 would convert to the equivalent of HDMI 2.0. Can anyone help me determine what the most effective port to port I should be doing is, what resolution it will give me, and a recommendation for a cable that I can get on Amazon or Newegg?

Also, bonus question, I'm probably going to get a PS5 when it comes out later next year; and I've heard that it will supposedly be able to run 4K games at 120hz, and 8K at 60hz. Is that even going to be possible with the HDMI 2.0 on the TV?

Thanks in advance.

Yes thru your HDMI it will give 4k resolution and the proper refresh rate as per specs.

You confirmed my port is an HDMI 2.0?

What year did that Sammy come out ?  If it is pretty recent then yes it will be HDMI 2.0.  That is a 2018 model right ?

I meant the laptop output. I know the Samsung input is 2.0.

@joev14

You will need HDMI 2.1 for 4k 120hz.  You wont have that.

4k 60hz however is fine.

The new consoles wont be doing 4k 120hz, thats for certain. 4k 60hz target, with 1080 120hz target ..sure ..but not 4k and 120hz, not unless its a very very light indy type game. @normal' games, and AAA titles wont be doing 4k 120hz or 8k 60hz, its simple not possible for hardware to jump that far in performance to point where they could build a console with such hardware and sell it for such a cheap 'normal' console price. Its just not happening.

The new consoles will however likely have HDMI 2.1

Currnetly PC and laptops dont have HDMI 2.1, thats next gen hardware. If u want to do 4k 120hz ull need to use DP, TVs dont have DP.

Would it be best for me to wait for a new TV to come out to match the specs of the PS5, or am I safe getting one now with HDMI 2.0?

Think u'll have more problem finding the PS5 to match a 4k TV :P

Adjust ur expectations, i think ur anticipating to much of the next gen consoles.

I mean if u really feel the need, buy Samsungs 8k TV ..its really expensive but does 8k 60hz, 4k 120 via HDMI 2.1 etc.

In all honesty i think ull be safe with a 4k 60hz display in regards to the new consoles.

Everything I've heard indicates next gen consoles will be closer to desktop PC's in every way. their graphical spec is on par with an RTX 2070, with a higher pricetag to match. Obviously I know it's not out yet, I'm just trying to prepare ahead of time.
