Hiya guys, Im curious, should I upgrade my whole rig or just the GPU, basically what would get me more for same dollar, I have i7 - 4790K @ 4.6 GHz -> doesent seem to want to go higher and 16 GB ddr3 1600 mhz ram - now im curious, if I put a GTX 2080 Super inside, how big of a bottleneck would my CPU be? at same time, I have a question, would I be able to put together CPU+mobo+ram for say 500$? that wouldnt bottleneck the 2080 super?

I plan to keep my V750 corsair PSU, blackrock 4 pro cooler and the drives, so that saves on those parts.

Thank you!

Youd be essentially fine for a while. You could upgrade to a better cpu mobo ram combo eventually but youll get about 85-90% of the gaming performance still

depends a lot on the games you're playing. some titles will be fine, others will demand more CPU power.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Yeah that CPU won't give you all the fps the 2080 super can dish out.  But its good investment when you get a new CPU mobo and RAM.  I wanna call it a bottleneck but not a big one as long as that CPU is OCed.  When you do finally upgrade your rig and use the 2080 super you have you will see blistering high triple digit frame rates in AAA titles and what not.

highly depands on the resolution you are playing at

the higher the resolution the more gpu bound a game gets (usually)

At 1080p you might notice bottlenecking in some CPU intensive titles (BF5 for example), but nothing really major that would impact the gaming experience, I would imagine. 1440p and up would probably be better in terms of utilising the most of the GPU's power, even with your 4790K.

I think you'd be fine just upgrading the GPU for now, and upgrading the rest later.

Depends on whether or not you're running 4k. If you're running 4k you should probably be fine (at least for a while). If you're running 1440p 144/120hz or 1080p 144/120hz (if you're not running one of those idk why you got a 2080 super) then yeah you're really gonna wanna upgrade that CPU. It's not going to be putting out 100+fps these days.

$500 including shipping and taxes wouldn't be that much of an upgrade over your 4790k tbh. You're probably looking at something like a 3600x and a low end X series motherboard and 16gb of ~3000mhz ram. Yeah it wouldn't bottleneck a 2080 where your 4790k might a bit, but really I think when you replace your CPU RAM MOBO core, you should expect to at least get one GPU upgrade out of it. I'd save a bit more to get a 3700x and a bit faster ram if it were me, and make sure you have enough slots to upgrade the RAM later.

Hmm, 3700x sounds affordable, considering I dont need to buy anything else, id say 340 eur for 3700x + 120 for mobo + 120 for ram. so 3700x wouldnt be a bottleneck for 2080 super? Also I checked, 3600x has bit better single thread performance than 3700x, since I dont do rendering - only gaming, would that be a better pick or no?

Yep.

@Aegis_Titan if you’re set on getting a 2080S, why not just get the GPU first and see if the performance on your current CPU is in line with what you’re wanting? You can always get a new CPU/motherboard/RAM combo later.

Alternatively, RTX 2070S has most of the performance of 2080S at a lower price. Still a very capable (some might even say overkill) 1080p card. So that might be an option as well.

As for Ryzen 3700X being a bottleneck: it isn’t. I’ve got that setup myself and it runs very well. 3600 (non X) is a better value for gaming though, if you’re willing to sacrifice two cores which most games aren’t really using for the time being.

Cpu will hold you back in any res and almost every game. Unless you like frame caps. Youll see when you get it but best to plan to upgrade soon.

I can't say exactly how much but you will have a bottleneck. I was in a similarish situation to you.

I had an i5 4690k with a GTX 980. I was experiancing CPU bottleneck for 144Hz gaming@1080p, previously I did 1440p gaming with small bottlenecks for some games like Black Desert Online. I upgraded to a i5 9600k this year, big gains for me - probably around 50 FPS + I can listen to music while I play without affecting FPS which is nice.

My opinion is, it depends on the games that you play, personally - I play CPU intensive games & I feel CPU intensive games are going to become more common but if you don't then you should be ok. If you're not planning on upgrading CPU within 2 years I'd say get a cheaper GPU because it's a waste IMO.

I'm looking to upgrade my GPU atm so I can 1440p 144hz game :).

Likewise BDO, im getting currently ~112 FPS on medium and 144 fps on low-medium, the CPU is rocking at around 32% with HT Disabled, so I assume its not giving its all for the GPU, the GPU current -> 1060 6 GB is hovering at around 96% usage. And yes, I plan to buy CPU also, depends on tax returns if instantly or later in year. Also im curious about nvidias new gpus said to be released early 2020?
