Will I run Apex on 144 hz with this setup

Hello!

I am trying to get stable 144 hz is it possible with this GPU? If not please tell me what to upgrade.

I was looking to get maybe the RTX 2060 Super? Or would I need the 2070/2080.. someone told me the 2060 was good for 1080p, but I was still unsure if it would hit 144 fps on games like Apex ( I can play on low no problem). else my monitor would be useless.

Current setup:

GPU = NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
Display Memory: 6072 MB
Dedicated Memory: 2007 MB
Shared Memory: 4064 MB

Monitor Model: BenQ XL2411Z (144hz)
Output Type: DVI

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 8130MB RAM


I have 8 GB ram, i dont know which DDR probably 3 or 4.

Its almost Christmas, hopefully some components are going to be a little cheaper so I can get a solid setup.

The 2060 Super should be enough for 1080p144 for Apex, unsure if your CPU and RAM amount are enough though. Yours is DDR3 btw.

I'm unable to run Apex at 144fps consistently even with an i5-9600k, 8GB DDR4 at 2400MHZ and with a 1060 3GB. While the GPU you'd be choosing might help out your PC, your other hardware is likely to hold back a lot of the available performance the newer GPU's could offer.

possibly? at competitive settings 8gb ram is weak and so is the 960 for 144fps

 

currently run a 8700k and 2080 and 144fps stable is perfect anytime after launching from the ship

Yes a 1060 or 2060 is not a 144hz card at 1080p at least.  Drop it to 900p and youll get your 144hz in most scenarios and what not.

Hi thanks for the answers, can I get more concrete answers on what to upgrade specificely to acquire 144hz with 1080p preferably. What do I have to upgrade more so that it doesnt interfere with the GPU I will buy? 

 

Do I really need to change my ram, cpu and gpu? If thats the case I also need a new power supply. Thats like a whole new computer lol

Well firstly, your CPU is really going to be a bottleneck for a 1060 or 2060 super.  Getting anything above a 2060 super doesn't make sense for that CPU.  Also yes the 1060 or 2060 is a 1080p card but it never says anywhere it will give you 144fps.  Its more for a sustained 60 to 80fps without real drops in frame rate.  If you wanna go triple digits then you need a more recent CPU and grab the 2070 Super.  I don't know if this is in your budget tho.  Also why sacrifice eye candy ?  Just dont use AA an other sh*T like that and set game to high settings and not ultra high.  CPU prices and mobo and RAM are really low.  You must upgrade all three then allow the video card to dish out 144fps.  Me for example I have my nvidia panel all settings maxed out all AA methods on and run at 2560x1440 and I get 140fps + in Quake Champions.  So if your going to stick to 1080p then the 2070 super and a cpu mobo and ram upgrade will do the trick.  If you need help getting a new CPU mobo and RAM let us know and well help you get something in your budget.

What frame rates are you getting now?

 

I would plan to do a full upgrade to ensure you get what you are asking for.

 

For the price of a 2080, you could get:

 

16GB DDR4 3600 RAM

Ryzen 5 3600 w/ stock cooler

Socket AM4 (B450) motherboard

and an RTX 2060S / RX 5700

 

That will get you the frame rates you are looking for too, while getting you better performance for basically everything else.

 

You can even spring for an after market cooler to overclock the Ryzen 5 too if you aren't hitting 144hz, but tbh, I am hitting 150+ fps in most esports titles with my Ryzen 7 1700 at 3.9ghz with an RX 5700XT just fine, so I imagine a Ryzen 5 3600 with the stock cooler will do the job without an issue.

Yes you are correct I forgot to say, you just need to tweak settings but still at the end of the day a 144hz card is usually a 2070 at 1080p sweet spot.

Yeah I understand my setup needs to be upgraded :P I would like help to choose a CPU, Mobo, and RAM. I have another problem though that my BenQ screen doesnt have DisplayPort, might be lucky to find a DVI 2070 out there. But does it make a difference? DisplayPort or DVI ?

A good option for you would be a lesser priced x570 board along with a Ryzen 3700 and then the 2060 will shine bright hehe.

Thanks alot for the help im hyped now to buy a new setup. The amd ryzen is better than any i5/i7 ? Dont know about the RX 5700 gpu because I've always been an nvidia user, im comfortable with the driver settings and know what to change for the best performance, I'm a bit skeptic about AMD, so i'll guess i go with the 2060s/2070s

NO!  Look at the game this dude wants to play - APEX LEGENDS.  A 1060, 2060, 1660 ti, 1070, 980 ti or ANY OTHER GPU OF SIMILAR POWER will be totally overkill, even with the i5

Cant even find a 2070s or 5700 with DVI. Might just also buy this Dell Alienware 24,5 inch with 240hz for the lulz because it has DisplayPort.

DVI will not ngive you 144hz.  See if you can get a 27" those 2 and half inches matter so your not 3 inches away to see stuff, but then again depends on what resolution you play.  If you play at 1080p then your fine with the Dell but if you want 1440p or higher then 27" is the minimum for that.

rip looked those up they really only do 60hz... i used thunderbolt usb c on my laptop to transmit to my moniter but its also a laptop. not sure if you have that capability. thunderbolt usbc to displayport*

maybe sell or take back your monitor for a new one?

He can easily just get a display port to DVI adapter for cheap on Amazon. I did as my secondary monitor is DVI only (It is 11 years old, lol).

That setup would be great for what you are targeting.

 

Yeah, sadly for what you are targeting, you need a new machine.

 

I personally have a bit of the itch to upgrade even with my Ryzen first gen as I am starting to target 100-200fps in all games, and I can tell my 5700XT is being held back a bit by it.

 

For example, I notice in Quake Champions, even on low, I can only peak at 120fps~.

dont buy an adapter (read the linked product) "up to 1920x1080@60Hz" ... you dont get 144 hz with that shit, you need an active dvi-dp adapter which is over 100€.
