HDMI to VGA adapter screen blacking out.

Hello guys i bought a HDMI to VGA off amazon and when i am using it the screen just goes black or a second or two. It kept getting longer and longer and then stopped working. I swapped monitors and it just turns black randomly again but has not stopped working yet. Both monitors are 5+ years old. It could be the cheap adaptor or the cable, sometimes the connection is loose causing stuff like that to happen.
