Is it possible to do dual channel with different size ram?

My friend got a MSI GL62QC  it has a single channel SO-DIMM 8GB DDR4 2133mhz stick.

 

I have an extra SO-DIMM 4GB DDR4 2400mhz stick just lying around collecting dust and i'm planning to give it to him.

 

My question is, will it work? I know that my 4gb stick will run at 2133mhz because of the other ram, that's fine. But will it work? I mean will it be dual channel?

usually this does not work, but there are cases where it can. Since you;re gonna give it to him anyway so he can have 12GB, might was well just see what happens.

Yes, that's called flex mode. It will run dual channel until one of the channels run out of memory, and you'll get single channel performance afterwards.
