Unique External Monitor Issue Alienware

I have a very unique issue with my Alienware 15 R2 (i77 6700HQ GTX 970M), I have determined what I believe to be the issue but not a fix. I want to use a second monitor so I purchased a HDMI to DisplayPort cable, and plugged it in. The monitor recognizes that a DP cable has been plugged in but gets no signal from the laptop. Under Display in the control panel no second monitor is detected and under device manager it is not recognized either. I believe the issue is with Nvidia Optimus, as far as I am aware Optimus is the software used to swap between integrated graphics card and discrete GPU, the integrated graphics card is always used except for in gaming which CPUID HWmonitor has shown me since GTX 970m utilization stays at 0 until in gaming. The HDMI port on the back of my laptop I believe is directly on the GTX 970M so when plugging in the HDMI to DP cable it isn't being recognized since the 970 isn't being used. I've tried launching a game and then plugging in the monitor but the issue stays the same, I've also tried setting the laptop to only use the 970m in the Nvidia control panel but that has not worked. Any ideas? All help is appreciated, thank you.

don't think NVIDIA control panel or anything is an issue. try connecting it to something like your TV through a HDMI-HDMI cable.

 

Reason being, these cables are meant for a DP OUT - HDMI IN connection. DP outputs carry the correct signal for a HDMI input.

 

When you use a HDMI OUT - DP IN configuration, the HDMI output probably doesn't carry all the signals required for a DP input.

 

In order to get a HDMI OUT - DP IN configuration, you would likely need an ACTIVE HDMI to DP converter like this https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Active-HDMI-DisplayPort-Converter/dp/B004I6IYSM

Ah okay, would it be possible to use a DP-DVI or VGA cable?

if your INPUT is going to be DP, your OUTPUT must be DP unless you use an active converter.
