Damaged USB Port is making all USB ports not work.

Hey guys! I was wondering if you could help me by telling me how to remove the power from the top USB ports. As the one of the top USB ports is broken and damaged. I currently have a NZXT H500i as a case please help me this started happening to me tomorrow!

Almost forgot to mention every USB port works except for the broken top USB port which is making every other USB port have a power surge and not work. When I plug in my mouse the lights turn on for a second and then turns off.image.thumb.jpg.a21582a597934832efa06231e2252c36.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.517d2e5d77619eb4b11d3915cf61874e.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.c8d0dbc4c992b7df51efff36d58dbab4.jpg

What second one? Both those plugs are USB headers. One USB 2 & other USB 3. You will only have 1 front panel USB header.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

Don't forget to tag or quote in your reply if you want me to know you've answered or have another question.

Are you sure you unplugged the right cable? A usb header should not have anything to do with a fan header. What motherboard are you using?

Maybe just try and disconnect the entirety of the I/O panel , except the power/reset/hdd indicator wires.

Hmm, all I can think of that you can try is that you can remove every cable coming from the case, including the power button. Then start the pc to rule out if it's the case that's causing an issue. It could be that another part of your pc got damaged due to the case.

wow... all i can say is some people can be idiots sometimes.

Your figured out the problem.. a usb port is damaged.

Look at the stupid USB ports :

Spot anything wrong?

Turn OFF your computer, unplug it, and now you can simply USE A SCREWDRIVER, or  SMALL SCISSORS or some TWEEZERS to bend those contacts in the USB connector (the one on the right in the picture)

Either CUT the contacts inside, or grab the contacts and wiggle, twist them until the metal fatigues and breaks.

BASICALLY, what you want to do is to make sure every contact in the USB connector on the right, DOES NOT touch any other contact or the metal housing

When you're done, there will be no more short circuit, no more problems.. but that USB port on the right will simply not work.

I mean Jesus, it's common sense, something is shorted? Un-short it!

If you want, you can go further... open both side panels of the case, look at the two USB ports on the front panel.  Put your hand on the cable coming out of that broken port and follow it down to where it goes into the motherboard

Follow the cable with your hand towards the connector on the motherboard and about 5-10 inches before the connector, just get SCISSORS or a KNIFE and CUT THE CABLE.  THen get some electrical tape or something and insulate each USB wire from that cut cable separately with some tape so you don't have a short between two wires where you made a cut.

You'll still have the other USB connector functional.

Alternatively, you can take out the full USB connector, and buy a separate USB 3 bracket and install it on the back of the PC - your two USB ports in the front will simply not be functional.

You don't have to mess with the USB 2 headers unless the cable from that fauly usb port goes into those headers. Put your hand on the cable and follow it down.

I suspect you have one USB 2 plug with the fan controller, and one USB2 plug from something else.

IF you want, you could use a needle to remove the lock from each individual pin in one connector to take out the wires and transfer them to the other connector, so you won't have 2  usb2 headers full.

The front/top USB headers on the NZXT H500i are BOTH USB 3.1

Both those USB 3.1 ports are provided through a single USB 3.x header.

Disconnect the USB 3 header on the motherboard side (that thick USB 3 cable by the 24-pin cable), and you would be good.

Since the front USB ports come from ONE header, you will lose access to both of them.

No need to disconnect any of the USB 2.0 headers.

Again, they are (should) be completely separate from the USB 3.1 header.

The NZXT "smart" fan controller included with the H500i uses up a USB 2.0 header...so makes sense all your fans stop working if you disconnect it.

Display should not be affected by USB...since it comes from the graphics card, connected to the PCI-E interface, going from DVI / HDMI / DP from the back of the graphics card, to your monitor...UNLESS your motherboard is damaged from the USB ports being damaged, and shorting out, etc.
