I bought a chinese Maiwo 4x usb 3.0 pci-e card, which does actually come with a cd, but in my case I didn't get a cd (bought from a local shop), I complained, but the most they know is to point me to the device manager, which I already knew.

Anyway the model name as far as I could figure out is Maiwo KC005 and I have the receit, so I could return it, but I have a load of things to do in the next few days, so I really don't want to give it back, then search local shops to find another pci card, etc.

here's their website, obviously in chinese, I did a little google translate searching, but there's a lot to cover and maybe I missed something and maybe someone here actually speaks chinese http://www.maiwo.hk/

I'm using Win 10 home, on the box that I have it says that Win 10 is supported. The device manager btw. does recognize there is something, but clicking on auto update or whatever it's called just says "the best drivers are already installed", so that's not working.

Can't find pictures with the card.... can you take some pictures of the card?

There should be a chip on the card, which creates those 4 usb ports. What does it say on the chip?

The most popular usb controller chips are probably less than 5-10 different ones, so you could probably search for a usb controller card that uses the same chip, then go on that usb controller's card page and download that card's driver and use them.

If there's heatsink on chip or nothing printed on it, go in device manager, select properties on the usb controller entry which seems to have problems , select the Details tab and look at the Hardware IDs

If you have those codes, you can google them and find out what chip you have.

In the picture below I have

Vendor ID : 8086

Device ID : 1E26

so if I search in Google "usb 8086 1e26" i easily find out it's a USB 3 controller made by Intel.

There's also sites with databases of those IDs

for example : https://devicehunt.com/search/type/pci/vendor/8086/device/1E26

You can type your numbers in that search box on the page.

This is the one, not the best pic, but it's almost 12am here, so I'm off to bed, I'll look at it tomorrow in more detail

The logo on the chip makes me think it's a NEC controller (Renesas) but it's JUST A GUESS...

It's a possibility it's a NEC720201 in which case there may not be a Windows 10 driver.

The driver here is for up to Windows 8.1 if it ends up being what i guess:

I took the chip out, it's an VLI 805 chip and their site says that there is Windows 10 support for it https://www.via-labs.com/product_show.php?id=48

but I can't find a win 10 driver for it anywhere, I found some older drivers that say win xp, 7, 8, 8.1, but they don't want to install

Well, use your brains. You know now that the chip is VL805, so as I explained, google for some other controllers with VL805

I entered "VL805 usb controller card shop"  - shop will give me stores that sell usb controller cards.

I got three results among the first 10 results which were significant :

1. DIGITUS 4-Port USB 3.0 PCI Express Add-on Card

USB 3.0, 4 Port, PCI Express Add-On card 4 Ports A/F External, VL805 chipset

https://digitus.shop/en/Computer-Components/I-O-cards/DIGITUS-4-Port-USB-3-0-PCI-Express-Add-on-Card.html

The page has a Downloads button and there's a 130 MB download right there

The readme pdf inside doesn't say windows 10 though but it's a start. Also the driver may still work on Windows 10.

2. STARTECH PEXUSB3S42 4 Port PCI Express USB3.0 Card - 3 + 1

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/ADPSTT2940629/STARTECH-PEXUSB3S42-4-Port-PCI-Express-USB30-Card

Down in the specifications it says it uses VL805

Startech is a known brand, so i can go to their site and search for that model ... https://www.startech.com/eu/Cards-Adapters/USB-3.0/Cards/4-port-pcie-usb-3-card~PEXUSB3S42#main-overview

and you have there a Support button, which points you to driver downloads

[VIA_VLI VL805] Windows USB 3.0 Controller Card.zip

version 4.5

This is a newer version, maybe it has windows 10 support

There was also an Orico controller card, and Orico has a good website.

I went there and found ORICO PVU3-5O2I : http://www.orico.cc/us/product/detail/3893.html

Right down at the bottom is the driver, and that says ORICO PVU3_Series_Driver_V4.90A_AP  ... 4.90 may refer to the VIA driver, and 4.9 is higher than 4.5

Driver

And you can keep going like this and search for drivers, if the above don't work hopefully you eventually find one.

And this is driver 4.70c : https://www.usb-drivers.org/via-labs-vl805-usb-3-0-controller-driver.html

The page says that Windows 10 doesn't need drivers as the ones built in should work.

2 updates:

1. like the first post says I tried uninstalling stock drivers windows installed...or I think I did that, but I think I actually made bad things worse, this is how device manager looked before and then how it looks now after, the USB 3.0 root kit and the Generic usb hoob (the third in row) isn't showing up anymore, I tried restarting and putting the card again, but didn't work. I didn't yet try to boot up the system without the pc, then shut it down and put the card in again and see if that works.

2. I sent an email to VIA, here's their response:

VL805 has no vender USB3.0 driver, it use Win10 inbox driver. Windows should automatic install USB3.0 driver for VL805 card.

This is obviously not the case, I tried with Driverpack, but I guess it doesn't register the card because I deleted something in the device manager (the root kit or usb hoob), so I need to get those 2 back and then try with driverpack or something

Spoiler

  • 2 weeks later...

I finally fixed it, it turned out that the part was simply damaged or something, I took it to one service guy and then he tried on multiple different OS's, driverpack, driverbooster and all that, every single driver we could find, we even contacted the distributor of that part and they gave us a driver that couldn't be found online and nothing worked, then the shop where I bought it asked to try it out themselves and they also couldn't do anything after a few days, so they put in another pcie card of the same type and...it instantly worked.

So...yeah, in case you come across a problem like this, especially if you buy lower quality stuff, it might happen that you simply bought a faulty part.

  • 2 years later...

Same issue, Windows doesn't recognize the card, installing drivers doesn't help, etc. etc.

The kicker? The PCIe card works _FLAWLESLY_ under Linux. Lights right up and loads the USB thumb drive if inserted. Tried Windows both native and as a VM with PCIe passthrough (an M.2 SSD is recognized with no problems passed through).
