I have a 2018 macbook pro that I have 56Gb of Video files on that I need to move to my PC desktop. The motherboard on the desktop has a usb c port. I dont have an external drive big enough to put the files on there. Is there a way to plug my mac directly into my Pc and move the files over to my specific drive of choice on my desktop? I have a type C usb cable that can plug my mac into my Pc.

Pc Specs:

Ryzen 7 5800x- ROG STRIX X470-F  - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16gb 3200mhz - Kraken X63 AIO - MSI VENTUS 3x OC RTX 3070 - EVGA 1000W GW - NZXT H500i

Over the network. I do believe MacOS supports the SMB protocol.

What are the steps to do it over the network?

You should be able to share the drive on the Windows computer then go into your Mac and specify the Windows share on the network by IP address (on Linux it's be smb://x.x.x.x).

I could be wrong about the steps for MacOS though I know it's a little different. @DrMacintosh

You’re probably more knowledgeable about this than me. I haven’t messed with anything related to networking.

Asking you was worth a shot, thanks for answering.

@Den-Fi you're up :D. Connecting to SMB on MacOS? Same as Linux?

Yep. Go > Networks or Go > Connect to Server > smb://IPAddressorHostname.

Hostname resolution in Windows IMO is trash. IP or nothing. Also thank you for the clarification.

@OP When you share the drive you'll also have to set read/write permissions or else you won't be able to access the drive. If this is temporary you can just set full access permissions read/write. It's faster/easier. When you're done you can turn it off.

I don't have a Guide on this (on the list now) and I'm not on a Windows computer right now nor have access to one so all I can give you at this time is a super basic run down of the steps based on memory:

  1. Make sure you firewall isn't blocking file sharing by enabling network discovery. You can do this by going to your Network Tab from This PC. A pop-up will tell you network discovery is disabled. Click it. Enable it.
  2. Now go to This PC and right click the drive you want MacOS to access -> properties.
  3. From properties you'll want to go to the share tab and enable it. Click permissions and enable Full Control.
  4. You may also have to go to the security tab and add Everyone to the permissions group.
  5. With this and hitting Apply/OK. You should be able to smb://ip-of-windows machine into the desktop and push the files over.

This is technically ill-advised because you're disabling a bunch of security but as a one off task you can disable sharing when you're done.

I'll write a guide (at some point) step by step on how to do this and how to do it with a little bit of security (requiring password authentication). ?
