PSU Tier List 4.0 rev. 14.6

Last Update: 29-11-2020

Gray - EoL / obsolete. Generally not recommended for purchase since it's going to be pre-owned, refurbished or old stock.
Green - small form-factor (gold and blue colors are disregarded due to scarcity of SFX PSUs)
Gold - best units in the tier (includes requirements for blue color in tier A)
Blue - quiet operation under moderate load (see details in the spreadsheet)

See spreadsheet for changelog, methodology, detailed description of colors, sources, notes on grayed-out units including issues like GPU incompatibility or quality and performance issues, and other additional info.

Protections

Voltages

  Reveal hidden contents

12V rail

The most important rail in current PSUs, mostly used by the power hungry parts like the GPU and CPU, but also part of the motherboard and part of the molex connector.

5V rail

An important, but much less used rail, mostly used by storage and part of the GPU.

3.3V rail

A rail that gets less and less relevant, it provides power to the RAM (though this can be 12v as well these days), chipset and M.2 drives

Single- and Multirail

  Reveal hidden contents

Single rail

A single rail lets all the current of a voltage, in this case 12v go over a single trace or “rail” (see them as breakers in your house). This has the advantage of turning off less quickly, but does mean it allows full current to go through a single wire or connector, potentially melting or burning it before shutting down

Multi rail

Multi rail these days aren’t physical rails, rather they have multiple points where they measure the current (generally 2-8). it can shut down the psu earlier to protect itself, with a lower chance of burning through connectors and/or cables with a catastrophic failure.

Regulations and Topologies

  Reveal hidden contents

Digital parts

  Reveal hidden contents

Digital Monitoring

Monitors current and reports it to software like NZXT CAM or Corsair iCue, generally using the OCP rail to measure.

Digital Circuit

Analog and digital circuits at the end have one goal: transmit data and process information into other forms(sound, light, etc). Digital circuits function on two fixed signal levels, 1s and 0s(binary). This allows for better control of switching frequencies under different loads and can achieve really high efficiency, but is also much more expensive to implement

Specifications

  Reveal hidden contents

ATX specification

A certification maintained by Intel that sets baselines for PSUs to meet.

c6/c7 crossloads

c6/c7 sleep states or “Haswell ready” connects to a sleep state used on Intel processors of 4th gen or newer. AMD has these sleep states too, but doesn’t specifically name them. most importantly it has to meet a crossload performance and that it has to be keepable to do a zero-load-power, that most group regulated units can’t meet, it’s highly recommended you pick something up for modern systems that meets this.

Ripple is mostly the noise in DC not filtered out from the AC current. A high ripple can shorten part’s lifespan. Intel allows up to 120mV, but we prefer to keep it below 50.

Inrush current limiting

An inrush current limiter tries to limit inrush current, the instantaneous current electronic devices draw when turned on. This is normally done with a so called NTC Thermistor.

In my country the RMx is € 150 minimum.
I seek above all that it is silent.
 Enermax Revolution DF € 120
Corsair RM850 € 125
Bitfenix Whisper 850 115 €
Super Flower Leadex III 850 € 124
Corsair RM750 € 90 Is it enough for 5800x and RTX 3080?

Which? Any other option?

Since no one else answered this, the BitFenix Whisper 850 is perfect for the price. The RM750 technically can get the job done, but 850w makes sure you have enough headroom even if you overclock everything. If the Revolution DF is also 850w for 120, that would be my second choice if the Bitfenix Whisper isn't in stock.

Side note: I like the change to have gray for older/EoL PSU models.

I'd say EVGA too, fanless (although bq! idle RPMs are around 600 which should be very quiet), all jap-caps (not that it matters much, bq!'s Teapo caps are decent too).

Thanks for response. By the time I got to ordering one they were all sold out so I ended up buying EVGA Supernova 650 GT for extra 12 Euro vs the GQ unit but with 7 years warranty. Hope it ends up being the better option in the long run.

Error on our side, tier D position is up-to-date.

Hi dudes. Nox Hummer X1200W 80 PLUS Platinum  is bad?

Judging by promotional photos it appears to be based on SAMA Forza Platinum platform which is decent by itself, but NOX were caught switching hardware after initial reviews\sales so i really wouldn't trust them. Avoid unless this unit is cheaper than 550\650W tier B units.

Is this the same as the Neo Eco v2?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

No. NE-M v2 is apparently Andyson's group regulated platform, while Neo Eco II unless Antec came up with a different revision is Delta's platform like one in VP-F Bronze but it was released in 2016 and Delta doesn't make consumer PSUs anymore so they probably did came-up with different revision if it's still being sold.

There are no pin for 12V OVP/UVP on GR8313 supervisor, it's entirely possible that RSY implemented 12V OVP/UVP by other means but we don't have confirmation on that, neither they disclose on what rails there are OVP/UVP present. In any case, they don't claim OCP at all, and OCP on minor rails is a requirement for tier C and up, so it stays in tier D.

I remember seeing the Corsair TX-M series in gold something like a week ago, do I remember wrong or did something change? Because I ended up going for a TX650M for my new 5600x - 3070 PC, did I do a mistake? The wattage seemed enough

It was a mistake. It was Gold in Tier B, then it was moved to Tier A but they forgot to remove the Gold color when they moved it.

MAIN PC:

CPU: Intel® Core™ i9-9900K Processor  Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi  CPU Cooler: Scythe Fuma 2  GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra  RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4x8GB) 3000Mhz CL15

It was a mistake on our side, it shouldn't have been gold since it isn't exactly quiet (which is a requirement for gold color among with certain level of performance). But it's a good unit otherwise.

Okay thanks. Didn't find it at first because I tried Ctrl+F with the 750 inside.

So It can be dangerous, explains why I always see it on discount here in France.

Of course there is OCP/OPP - set to about 125% for 500W unit.

There is also OVP on controller PWM EM8564A, you wanna say seasonic doesn't have basic protections (lol)?https://ithardware.pl/testyirecenzje/test_zasilacza_seasonic_s12iii_500_w_lider_klasy_budzetowej-11808-5.html

I mean yeah probably. It’s basically just an upgraded SX700-PT with some of the annoying things (like fan noise) fixed.

i have one on the way lol, returning my SX700-PT

Current System: Ryzen 7 3700X, Noctua NH L12 Ghost S1 Edition, 32GB DDR4 @ 3200MHz, MAG B550i Gaming Edge, 1TB WD SN550 NVME, SF750, RTX 3080 Founders Edition, Louqe Ghost S1

It's not, as i said, it's made by Enhance, not Sirfa as 700W model, it's completely different.

I'm talking about OCP on minor rails, i.e 5V and 3.3V, not OPP.

3 hours ago, Sapphiree said:

That's a different OVP, if you look at the datasheet, it's set to 29V. They could've used a doubler for this feedback but i wouldn't rely on that, and we're still missing UVP.

3 hours ago, Sapphiree said:

You are very discerning ! But in this case it's RSY, although Seasonic green-lit this stuff so i blame them too, at least until there would be some reviews, not much hopes tho as Seasonic doesn't seem to want to send review samples of their low-end models much. Still waiting for when they'll send Core to Aris. Maybe they're afraid to disappoint their loyal fans ?

Oh really? Thanks for letting me know.

Should I be worried about buying it for my 3080 + 3700X instead of the SX700-PT?
