Hello Is deliding i9 9900k worth it? I can borrow  Dr.delid Tool which seems easy to use. I can borrow the tool for free so total cost for me would be grizzly condactonaut. Also this delid would be my first attempt. What temperature decrease could i expect? My cooler is dark rock pro 4. Thx

It's soldered imo.

What's this useful for?

Not really worth it IMO. It's a lot more work than previous delidding, and doesn't make as much of a difference.

Edit: Just realized you were planning to replace it with paste, not liquid metal. That would decrease performance.

Mate the i9 9900K IHS is soldered, if you try to delid it all you'll achieve is killing the CPU.

As above, uses solder not paste

Honestly if you are not going bare die, it isn't worth it. The drop in temps from going to LM over solder is anywhere between 3-6C. A naked mount would net another 4-5C, which might get you an extra 100mhz if you are lucky and were bound by thermals anyways.

Even going bare die is risky as the die is extremely fragile and easy to crack. Not to mention cooler compatibility becomes an issue as not all heatsinks are flat or machined in a way to handle a perfectly flat die. Water blocks typically are, but then you have to be concerned with the various mounting pressure of those blocks.

With this being your first attempt, and due to the variables in play (your Dark Rock air cooler, the CPU being soldered, the minimal improvements in temperature reduction) I would probably just steer clear for now and enjoy the processor as is. If need be, you can always go with a custom loop and decide from there if delidding is worth it should your temperatures be unsatisfactory.

Hes going to use LM.

Grizzly condactonaut is a paste. Even the benefit of removing the adhesive won't make up for the difference to a lower quality TIM.

I delided my 9900k and I'll tell you right now if you haven't delided a cpu don't try a soldered cpu. But indium is extremely soft so if you do it right you won't hurt the cpu at all. You need to do it right tho. And unless your 9900k can hit the upper limit of what the 9900k's clock to. There's no real point in doing this.

That said. I saw a small improvement in temps. However I saw the same drop in temp by lapping my ihs.  Combined it was a nice drop. But personally if I had an average 9900k I would just check how flat my ihs was and if it's not just lap it and call it a day since that's much safer overall.  My ihs was kinda like a soup bowl. Thanks Intel.

But for the last few months I had my 9900k I went lidless on it with a custom loop and I prefer that over everything else. No shockers that was the best but you need a mount to hold it in. I just used my block lol. But you will need a shim to protect the cpu. If you are not totally flat you can chip or crack it and kill it. I chiped some old athlons and what not back in the day they were fine but with how small stuff is not a small chip can get a pretty big Chuck of your cpu.  My spacer was like the old school athlons had. Just 4 little foam pads and it worked great.

My mistake, I thought all of Thermal Grizzly's products were paste.

It's easy to get bamboozled, lol. Kryonaut is the paste, Conductonaut is the LM, I always confuse the two.
