Hey all! I was wondering what I should upgrade in my system, I'm relatively new to this so I'd like some advice. My CPU is at 100% utilization when playing, my GPU is at XXX% utilization while playing games (fortnite, overwatch, csgo). For fortnite I run at about 80-70 fps. I believe my GPU is holding my system back and I wanted to make sure with you guys. I'd like to get a little above 120fps on most games with 1440x1080 with mid to high settings. Let me know what to upgrade, I'd like to keep it under $250 whatever it is. If it's a little more expensive with a way better bang for your buck don't hold back, please recommend it. If those prices are outrageously low also let me know. I built my system during the Bitcoin craze, that's why I have a cheaper GPU. Used is also ok, aslong as it wasn't used for mining.

Tbh the main hardware can all be complained about for 1080p 120fps in AAA games. 7600 isnt clocked high enough, 1050ti is too weak etc. But if anything's gonna go first, it will be the graphics card. Get a GTX 1660, then maybe a larger capacity SSD.

@iHildy not an easy question. BUT I think, you should also consider your Mobo&CPU: these 6-7th gen intel CPUs, and mobos sell for insane prices 2nd hand, sometimes you can just sell the thing and get brand new B450& Ryzen 2600x, or B365& I5 9400F package, without spending more than the selling price of your older stuff (at least locally though..).

For 250~ GPU offerings: 1070-1070ti second hand is a sound choice, though, even an RX580 would be ~50-60% faster than 1050Ti, and those are very cheap (from 100USD used).

I'd update the mobo&cpu as well as GPU. On the long run, you'll be much better off. You can still get a loads of cash from your 6th gen intel stuff, and upgrade to am4 or 8-9th gen Intel for almost te same price

Life is really challenging. I don't always suceed: )

I also have a 256gb ssd I forgot to mention, does that change anything? Pretty sure it's a Samsung one.

despite weak gpu which needed to upgrade first, your cpu constantly at 100 % with a stock cooler shall give you pretty high temps, over 85C? and may throttle, get abetter tower cooler for long term use

If your CPU is at 100% utilization, then I'd first upgrade the CPU. Depending on where you can live, you may be able to get a Ryzen 5 2600 for around $110-$120. 12 nm Zen+ may not be completely brand new, but it'll grant you more cores and threads without breaking the bank while giving you enough headroom for a good mid-ranged GPU. You can also pick up a new B450 board for another $80. This will leave you with about $50-$60 left.

If you're patient, you can take a visit to the secondhand market and use that $50 (and your old CPU/board) to buy yourself a new GPU. This depends on where you live and what you choose to sell on. These prices are based on where I am (midwest US). If you use a site like eBay or you use PayPal, make sure to take fees into account..

Your i5-7600 is still a pretty relevant CPU in 2019, so someone might want it if they're shopping for a decent gaming CPU on a budget. You can probably get at least $90 back on it, getting yourself to $140. This is enough to get you a used 8 GB RX 480. Not bad.

Then, you can sell your motherboard for at least another $40, getting you to $180. This can get you a new 8 GB RX 580 and leave you a little bit of money left over.

If you want to, you can sell your 1050 Ti for at least another $80, getting you to $260 - GTX 1660 range. Be careful doing this as your Ryzen 5 2600 does not have an integrated GPU, so you won't be able to use your PC until you install another graphics card. However, the GTX 1660 could very easily get you well over 120 FPS.

This sounds like a pretty good plan. I live in Texas. The Ryzen doesn't come with a cooler correct? I will edit the post in the afternoon after a little bit of testing and I'll post the temps.

2nd gen all come with cooler, tho not that impressive. Certainly better than what Intel gives for their 8th and 9th gen but there's still a reason to buy coolers

The AMD Ryzen 5 2600 comes with a Wraith Stealth cooler.

From my experience with my Ryzen 5 2600, it's enough to protect your CPU from overheating, but only that. It probably won't boost very high for workloads that hit the CPU hard for extended periods of time. After an hour of CPU folding on Folding@Home, my Ryzen 5 2600 hit 94.6°C (AMD's maximum rated temperature is 95°C) and only barely ran above the base speed.

If you're just gaming, you'll probably be fine. Streaming and gaming, though, you may want a cooler. If you plan on overclocking, you'd probably want a cooler. Yes, you can overclock on the Wraith Stealth cooler, but it's going to get very warm after a period of time, as the Wraith Spire is only intended for 65 W TDP CPUs.

A Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is a reliable budget cooler that costs only $30.
