X299 Evga Dark Supplementary 6PIN PCI-E Issue

Hello,

 

I have this board, and there is a supplementary 6 pin PCI-E power connector at the bottom.

Manual states that if I use SLI, it's recommended (as in it should be used).

 

However, I only have 6x PCI-E power slots in my PSU.

2x go to 1st 2080 Ti

2x go to 2nd 2080 ti

2x go to CPU.

 

An alternative would be to use a split cable (as in 8 pin to 8 pin and 6+2 pin) for at least one GPU so one 8 pin is released. Although, I know that would not be safe as the cable can only carry so much power and each 2080 Ti takes 330W when OCed.

 

Does that mean with my current PSU I am unable to use that connector?

correction, you have 4 PCIE power cables, and 2 EPS, they are separate and are not interchangeable or compatible with each other. 2nd, what PSU do you have? Is it the supernova P2 1200w you have in your signature?

This uses EPS power connectors, not PCIe, and they go to the CPU connector on the PSU (P2 1200w right?)

Currently in use HX1200i which I plan to get rid of.

P2 is ordered, but I don't know if I want to lose the money.

I know P2 could do it.

the HX1200i has 8 PCIE connectors, so you should have enough cables to be able to do what you need, hell you would have enough even if you had 2080tis that had 3 8 pin PCIE power plugs.

My version doesn't.

well you could potentially run into issues with the cards not getting enough power through the PCI slot, which is what that power connector is meant to supplement and lessen the load off the 24 pin. The P2 1200w has all the connectors you need as well, so just wait until that comes in and use that and sell the HX1200i.

Well, so I need to get rid of my HX1200i then. Sad days.

Defo need that extra connector.

what if you use a single cable (so uses one connector on the PSU) per card? Electrically not as good as using different cables per connector but the cable can definitely handle the 300w spec for 2 PCIe 8pin connectors, 2080ti don't violate that with standard BIOSes.

if you dont have the cables. You can test and see how the cards perform in SLI without the supplemental power, but EVGA is extremely smart with there hardware and wouldnt just recommend it for no reason. It could overload the 24 pin. I remember seeing a video about something similar to this recently from Gamers Nexus I believe, but cant 100% remember all the details.

There isn't enough connectors on the HX1200i PSU for what I want.

I gotta return the one I have now sadly.

Put it this way, ATX 24pin only has 2 12V cables compared to 3 for PCIe 6pin and 8pin connectors. Making them all pull 150w, you'll easily see how underrated PCIe specs are for power draw and how cruel it is to make the ATX 24pin handle 2 GPUs.

Yep. I remember something recently, I believe from Gamers Nexus describing this but cant recall specifics, just a vague recollection of the issue, or maybe it was a Level 1 video from Wendell??? who knows...

I'll return my PSU. I will lose about £20 but it's better than struggling. Thanks.
