Is it better than the clusterfuck that was 19.03? Got my laptop ready for a dual boot and Ubuntu is my normal go to but 19.03 was so god damn buggy i'm seriously thinking of trying a different distro.

You mean 19.04, not 19.03. Anyways, what kinds of bugs are you talking about? Just curious, I have both 19.04 and 19.10 and I ain't aware of any bugs aside from the usual Linux-is-quite-terrible-in-general stuff.

After it installed I did the mandatory apt update && apt upgrade and after it finished everything went to shit. First it didn't delete the lock file so apt refused to work at all until I manually deleted it. Then after I rebooted my GPU went into software mode despite everything I know of saying the driver was installed and working. Tried to fix that by reinstalling the driver and it refused to acknowlegde that I had valid download keys. Tried getting the keys from the apt servers and it said I didn't have the key vault installed.

It was literally just problem after problem after problem, almost like it was fighting me every step of the way.

I reinstalled, did an upgrade and exactly the same thing happened so at that point I gave in and went back to 18.04 which worked perfectly.

That's odd. Well, I haven't experienced that on either 19.04 or 19.10, so I dunno.

Yeah but like you said, it could honestly have been Linux being Linux.

I'm downloading 19.10 right now to try again.

I'm just about to run apt upgrade, wish me luck.

I've been running 19.04 for a while now and its been rock solid. Then again i don't dual boot and Ubuntu is the only OS installed.

Well 19.10 has been rock solid for me. It might have just been something in my laptop that particular kernel didn't like.

I had to upgrade the kernel manually because for some reason my GPU wasn't being detected. Upgraded to the latest kernel and now everything was working perfectly. That was until the HDD decided to die (not the fault of the OS, it's a 4 year old drive I had lying around) so now I have to reinstall everything once I replace the drive on next payday.

I much prefer Linux as an all purpose daily driver. Only keeping Windows on a second drive for emergencies, like the drive failing LOL.

Yeah my hunch is that there is something hardware related on your laptop that 19.04 didn't like all the much lol. I would like to run 19.10 myself but its too bleeding edge for me. In my situation, i need a stable build since i do critical work on my machine. Yes having a OS installed on a second drive can be a lifesaver haha. I got a windows 10 install on a spare ssd that i have in my drawer just in case.

For the video card issue, did you install the Navi firmware because that's still not included for whatever reason?

EDIT: Nevermind, missed the part about it being your laptop.

Be careful because Ubuntu has some sort of automatic updates activated, so even if you are not directly using apt it can be checking for it or even updating it

Manually deleting apt lock files can cause inconsistency

Yep exactly. Usually it's "unattended upgrades" that take the lock for a few minutes after boot or after running an `apt update` if enabled. If you manually removed the lock and ran other installs concurrently that will have f$cked everything and probably explains everything after that.

The upgrade finished successfully, I waited for over an hour and did multiple reboots before deleting the lock file. I also had updates enabled while installing so it SHOULD have upgraded everything during install.

The fact it did exactly the same thing on 2 separate installs makes me believe it was something hardware that 19.04 didn't like.

It's a bit of a coincidence that it was the GPU that stopped working then on 19.10 the GPU wasn't detected at all until I upgraded the kernel to 5.3.7 from 5.3.0.

Running 19.10 from a clean install. Never run the in-place upgrader (GUI or terminal), as it still causes problems (or has for me). Also. Yes 19.10 is laggy and buggy as hell. I'm surprised it left beta this way. 19.04 is as good as an LTS by comparison. Do yourself a favor and stick with 18.04 until 20.04 drops.

For the screen is blue and full of errors.
