It's been a while since I was really into computer gaming, hell its been 20 years. Having recently turned 40 and been stuck in Console land for the past 20 years, I am ready to head back into the land of PC gaming. And most importantly the wifey has given the OK to build a computer. The question becomes, what do I need.

I want to be able to play any game that I want without worry about hardware for the next couple of years. I already have a decent monitor (will need to upgrade in the future, but it works for now)

I have about $1500 Max to work with, but would like to keep it less if possible. I have been watching nothing but YouTube videos trying to get back in the game for a few weeks. I am hoping to make all the purchases on Black Friday to make the most of my money.

Thoughts? Where can I save some money?

Current Equipment

Monitor = LG 34UM60-P - 34" Ultrawide FreeSync

Idea 1 ( A Little on the Spendy Side)

CPU - Ryzen 7 3700X

GPU - MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Super

MOBO - ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus WiFi

RAM - 16 GB G.SKILL RipJaws (or equivalent DDR4 at 3200)

COOLER - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

CASE - I don't know

SSD - Atleast 1 TB

HDD - Something 2-3 TB to hold video

Power Supply = Rosewill Hive Series 750W Modular

Keyboard = Rosewell Mechanical Keyboard with Cherry MX Blue

Mouse = Corsair Gaming M65 Pro

Headphones = Corsair Gaming VOID Pro

???? - Will I regret going with a Ryzen 5 3600 instead? I will mostly be using it for Gaming, and the occasional work project (video editing) although I do most of that at the office.

???? - Is the graphics card overkill?

???? - Where else can I save some Money?

???? - Case ideas? I like the idea of a little RGB ( I have a Seahawks themed office and would love some more blue and green in there)

???? - Any other info that could be helpful.

*I know with wanting to do this on Black Friday, I am going to have to make some adjustments based on sales and what not, but if I can nail down the CPU, GPU, MOBO, COOLER ideas then adjust the rest, I think I will be happy.

i do not think so. using one of those myself, paired with a 2070, and i get about 40-50ish fps in shadow of the tomb raider at 4K at max settings

3600 is the bang for the buck champ imo

if you do not need or want raytracing, i'd go AMD 5700XT

same or lower price (at least where i live) and offers you way better performance iirc

look into getting a B450 or X470 motherboard. should save you some bucks

just make sure you got the latest bios to make 3000 series cpus work

that one hugely depends on what you want to spend. as you are planing to go with a Hyper 212, good airflow will be #1 priority.

for very good and broad information on that topic, may i point you at "GAMERS NEXUS" over at youtube? they did many casereviews focused on cooling capabilitys.

RGB wise there are a fiew cases that come with included RGB fans. just make sure to stay away from closed off glass frontpanels as those may suffacate your rig.

Yeah I read about this and watched some videos on this, but it scares me if I am being honest, I don't even know where to start in this process.

Hell yeah, it's about on par with an 8700K - aka a killer gaming CPU.

Will basically add more info to what you already said as well:

"if you do not need or want raytracing, i'd go AMD 5700XT" - yes, the 5700 series is killing price/perf right now, unless you need RTX features or the better NVENC encoder on the 2000 series RTX cards, they're the better choice. The MSI Gaming X is the best one AFAIK, close behind are the Sapphire Nitro+ and PowerColor Red Devil, on the budget side AFAIK the Sapphire Pulse is a solid choice.

"look into getting a B450 or X470 motherboard. should save you some bucks" - yes again. X570 is essentially another tier on top of B450 and X470 (so X570 > X470 > B450). And X470 is basically just B450 with SLI support. B450 would be the best bang for the buck, something like the MSI Tomahawk or Tomahawk MAX would be an excellent option. Only go X570 if you really see yourself needing PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs in the future, or are planning to get something better than a 2080 Ti once that exists (the 2080 Ti and Titan RTX are the only cards that can almost push the limits of PCIe 3.0 x16, it'll be a while before we need better than that).

"That one hugely depends on what you want to spend. as you are planing to go with a Hyper 212, good airflow will be #1 priority.

RGB wise there are a fiew cases that come with included RGB fans. just make sure to stay away from closed off glass frontpanels as those may suffacate your rig." - GN is a hella good source for coolers, and our very own @TVwazhere can suggest solid cases for basically any budget. Would skip on the Hyper 212 though, you can usually get CPU coolers that perform the same or better for half the price. I'd personally spend more for a higher end Noctua, but then I'm a bit of a fanboy on that front, lol.

Then spend a little bit more for the MSI Tomahawk MAX B450 board. The MAX series boards are built for 3rd gen, basically the same as the normal versions but they're 100% going to come with a BIOS that supports the 3000 series Ryzens out of the box.

A couple thoughts, to get the best of deals I would definitely start watching TechDeal's channel and maybe follow his twitter, he keeps his eye out for deals and tweets them out as he sees them. If you don't want/need ray-tracing I would consider getting a 5700xt. It will get you more fps for about the same price.

Another thought, if you want to keep your cpu for around 5 years I would look into getting either the 3700x, or the 2700/2700x. I think that in the future games will likely continue to use more and more cores and threads, so an 8 core 16 thread cpu will likely last you longer than a 6 core 12 thread cpu.

I would suggest an R5 3600 or 3600x instead, the R7’s are effectively the same otherwise but with moar coars and for a gaming workload that’s not a necessity.

For the cooler for the love of god buy anything other than a 212 evo. Stock is honestly fine unless you want to overclock. But a decent aftermarket cooler has merits more than just temperature, and the 212 evo is a meme that needs to die in that regards. A bequiet pure rock or arctic freezer 34 are both great 120mm options in the price range of the 212 evo that look better and are much quieter. Thermals across the board are about the same for any 120mm single stack tower cooler.

The 2060 is fine for a 1080p ultrawide monitor in most games. I would consider it adequate more than excessive.

To save a bit of money, get a B450 board with a bios update preinstalled or get one with the bios update feature that lets you do it without requiring a compatible cpu. Google is your friend here, I don’t really have a list of boards that do that on hand but I think most of MSIs offerings do.

Micro ATX will be overall cheaper and fine for a single gpu build. You can get overall cheaper but adequate boards, cheaper cases.

On cases, I’m a fractal design fanboy. I suggest any of fractal designs offerings since they don’t really have bad options. There are low end budget choices and there are high end enthusiast choices. The Define C lineup is really nice imo, and the meshify models are the current general recommendation for having fantastic airflow.

On the super cheap side, if looks don’t matter, Rosewill SRM01 is a 25$ micro atx case that’s built decently well, looks incredibly plain and gets the job done.

This guys says go with a b450 motherboard. I agree. The best b450 mother board has to be the b450 msi tomahawk.

A good airflow case with RGB fans that actually use a mesh front panel would be the Coolermaster MB511 RGB. But beyond that there are a lot of good cases on the market, and a lot of bad ones too. It mostly comes down to what you like the look of. A Majority of cased made within the last 2-3 years are mid tower Tempered glass side panel cases with a PSU basement. Sometimes they include RGB either in fans, strips, or accents on the sides of cases.

The Hyper 212x has been succeeded by the Hyper 212 Black, and Hyper 212 RGB which are both good coolers with modern aesthetics.

- Same cooler but with an RGB fan (OP mentioned they wanted RGB and it's only $2 more)
- RGB RAM, but more importantly it's 3600MHz CL16, the sweet spot for Zen 2
- 2TB NVMe drive. Higher capacity than the Sabrent, a bit faster, and it's even slightly faster than the 970 Evo in most tests
- 4TB HDD for mass storage, and 5400rpm drives aren't much slower than 7200 ones at higher capacities (just found this out a few days ago, there's more to HDDs than RPM)
- MSI Gaming X 5700 XT, according to HardwareUnboxed (I think they've tested every one currently in existence, lol) it's the nicest one of them all
- same case and PSU, not really a way to go better than these without breaking the budget, and no real need to

So because you havent built a PC in centuries ( no offense). I would go with a full tower case, it gives you more room, especially with a full atx motherboard like the tomahawk. Don't get me wrong the tomahawk can fit into micro or mid tower cases but it can be a tight fit. It takes some good cable management, it that case is something you really want just take your time and make sure your cable management is good. watch lots of youtube videos on builds and building PCs and cable management.

I fit my tomahawk in a Fractal Design Mechify C, which is similar size to the masterbox case, but it was a bit of a tight fit atleast for me. It can work tho. Once you get the experience of building PCs then your next build in a few years go down a size.

but this is up to you.....otherwise this is a good build you have. I hope your happy with it no matter what case you choose.

Dont forget pcpartpicker.com - it can help find the best available deals.

Skip the Hyper 212. The included cooler with the 3600 is approximately the same cooling power, and the one with the 3700X is a tad better (and has an RGB ring.)

You could grab a B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC for a great board with some RGB and wifi/bluetooth ready. It's a bit of a savings from the X570 TUF.

For RGB case, check out either the Coolermaster H500 (the better of the two) or MB511

My Cougar MX330 mid tower is very spacious for a full ATX board... The Meshify C has great cable management and a PSU/Drive shroud... So there shouldn't have been any issues.

ATX mid is a very comfortable build.

So I stole @Zando Bob build and with the suggestions of @PurplDrank and @trevb0t i made 2 changes :

Cheaper SSD (still good), you can change for a 7200rpm HDD but indeed 5400 is nice since it has a lot of cache (i personally own it and it is a good HDD).

Change the case for a bigger one (more silent too with 2 200mm RGB intakes fan).

I kept the MSI GPU because it's one of the best (the Gigabyte is the best bang for bucks according by HarwareUnboxed).

The Hyper 212 is practically the same cooling power as the stock Ryzen cooler. That's just a waste of $40.

If OP wants to overclock, grab an eSports Duo or up your budget and invest in a Dark Rock Pro 4 / NDH-15

Solid build again, but I mostly avoided the 660p because I've heard once it fills up to a certain point it has a massive slowdown. The Sabrent Rocket is a much better option for barely more cost, and again the SX8200 is basically a 970 Evo without the Samsung tax.

It's not as scary as it looks. You've got essentially 4 CPUs to choose from (unless you're sub $600 budget). And it's about 5 solid GPU choices depending on budget.

Mobo needs are primarily determined by whether you plan to overclock your CPU. If you don't, there's also no need to waste money on an aftermarket CPU cooler.

Skip a $100 TXM PSU. This is cheaper and higher quality. Its non-modular, but this case has a PSU shroud, so it's easy enough to manage.

I went a little crazy on RGB, but frankly still hit $1200 and haven't sacrificed quality.

  • 1 month later...

First and foremost a HUGE thank you! I ended up placing this order this afternoon just a few minutes ago.

I know the Cooler is overboard, but if I am being honest its for looks more than cooling and I had some extra budget to spend on it. It's frivolous, but it is fun and that's what this is really about right?

Ended up spending a little more than I originally had planned, but I was able to update all my peripherals as well. Huge thanks to all again. And looking at the Black Friday ads, I was able to save over $600 from the original price of all of this stuff just a few weeks ago.
