Can i use second psu to power cpu and gpu.

So i have an hp compaq 8300. I have a second psu for my gpu and hdd. Can i also use the second psu to power my cpu and only use the main hp psu to power motherboard?

Yeah, but what kind of set up requires this?  WHy can the first PSU power everything?

Usually a 2 PSU setup is when you have more than two GPU or two PCs in one case.

 

First PSU does everything and 2 GPU, second PSU does the extra GPUs.

Doesn't the cpu get powered by the motherboard though? By powering the motherboard you'll be powering the cpu too, you can't power the cpu alone

Its has a connector on hp motherboard.

I get random fps stutters. I believe it might be the 12v rail

Its an hp pc to which i added a gpu usuing a second psu. I cant upgrade the original psu cauz of the weird motherboard connector.

I think i recently did this with the compaq 8200 mid tower series. The problem is the old stock PSU has a signal that is fan-okay, which is not present in any modern PSU. So you have to bridge the wire from the CPU fan header to fake the signal into motherboard. Otherwise the system will not post. I suspect something similar will happen to 8300.

What are your full system specifications?
What games are you playing?

I7 3770, 8gb ddr3 1600mhz, rx580(powered by external psu.). I play destiny 2, cs go, apex etc. But the main issue is sometimes i get fps drops like a sudden drop from 144fps to 20 or 30 fps for like a sec. Mainly this issue is in fortnite. My setting in fornite is distance epic rest all low. Capped at 144fps.

So..? Can i use it. Or can i just do it to test if there is an actual problem in the hp psu?
