Hi Linus,

I really enjoy your videos!!

I’m really interested in seeing if the new intel chips just released would work in the iMacPro and what difference they would make to speed.

Original iMac Pro 18Core Xeon vs 18Core i9 10980XE vs 18-core W-2295

1. Are the Chips Compatible

2. Benchmark Speeds

3. Resolve Transcode Speeds

4. Heat Difference

5. Power Draw Difference

6. More Ram Possible

Warm Regards,

Wez

In theory yes, in practice there are two near impossible conditions that must be met first:

1. Apple puts out BIOS update to support newer CPUs

2. These newly supported CPUs include Core series CPUs instead of Xeons only

Purely from changes to clock speed. There is no difference in microarchitecture (still Skylake microarch) so you can expect the same IPC.

Could be mildly better for the same TDP but don't expect much gain here, since 14nm process from Intel has matured long ago and there isn't much room of improvement left from Skylake-based 18 core the iMac Pro originally has.

Nope, no increases there. Or rather, since Core series don't have REG support like Xeon series do the max RAM possible is reduced (tho doesn't seem like iMac Pros run REG, with 8x 32GB hitting the max offered 256GB memory spec)
