Will a Pci-e 3 gpu work in a 2.0 slot?

After having a terrabe PC for years im finally getting an upgrade, my friend has offered his GTX1050Ti to me for an upgrade as he bought a new GPU.

This is embarrasing but  have been living with a GTS 250 1GB for a LONG time

You could technically put it in a PCIe 1.1 slot and it would work fine. PCIe is forwards and backwards compatible.

I say this becuase back in the day pci-e 1.0 , 1.0a , and 1.1 had compatibility issues on old boards. but provided your machine has no specific bios updates related to gpu compatibility then a 3.0 card should work in a 2.0 slot

Thanks for the support, asking this question was quite important as i had bought PREVOUSLY a GTX960 and it failed to work.

 

Just to let you know i DID update the bios On my ASRock H61-VS

asrock..... wasn't always a good board manufacturer. I've actually never had a good experience with one.

I'm aware today they are a 100% different company than they used to be. But 2012 was still in the splash zone for their "cheap and crappy" days. 

You may have also just had a bad 960 , anything is possible
