NVIDIA has created a gaming studio to remaster classic PC games with Ray Tracing effects

Quote

It appears that Quake 2 RTX will not be the only remaster for which NVIDIA will be adding real-time ray tracing effects. According to a job listing, the green team has created a studio that will specialize on adding Ray Tracing effects to remasters of even more classic PC games.

As the description for this job listing reads, NVIDIA has kicked off an exciting new game remastering program:

“We’re cherry-picking some of the greatest titles from the past decades and bringing them into the ray tracing age. Thus, we’ll be giving them state-of-the-art visuals while keeping the gameplay that made them great. The NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios team is picking up the challenge starting with a title that you know and love but we can’t talk about here.”

We should note that NVIDIA created this job listing 17 days ago. In other words, this is after the release of Quake 2 RTX. So yeah, that title that we all “know and love” is not Quake 2. Two games that could really benefit from Ray Tracing effects are Unreal and Doom 3. Doom 3 had cutting edge technology with stencil shadows and fully dynamic lighting, so it could possibly look amazing with Ray Tracing. On the other hand, Unreal was one of the first games that pushed the envelope of FPS visuals, so it would be cool to see it with some RT effects.

Unfortunately, though, we don’t have any additional details...

I think this is a great idea to get many more RTX games out the door. There are tons of games I can think of from back in the day, that as remasters, could allow for a new generation to enjoy (Half Life series, F.E.A.R. series, Max Payne series, Serious Sam series - to name a few). This also addresses many people's doubts about RTX in general; reassuring that NVIDIA wants to make the technology more useful, and not simply a tech demo or a fad that dies out.

Cool idea. It will be interesting to see if these games are playable with their new look on older 10-series cards or even existing and upcoming AMD cards.  As much as they're obviously doing this to promote RTX, I would guess that in most cases you won't actually need the RTX hardware to be able to get playable frame rates (or at least, you shouldn't) since the games are geometrically so simple.  It's the same theory behind why ray tracing mods for Minecraft work on non-RTX cards.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Oooh that actually sounds pretty awesome. I can see quite a few games that would look amazing with RTX properly implemented. If enough of ones that I want to play get done it may convince me to make Nvidia my next gpu choice.

I look forward to this. Games like System Shock 2 would be cool and Deus Ex as well. FEAR as well would be dope. Nvidia doing all the cool shit as usual, it wouldn't surprise me if AMD responded with something similar like they always do.

You know a company is serious about their product when they go to this level, it is quite unnecessary and if the games fail it will look really bad for them and their hardware.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

I have a feeling the games they target will fall somewhere between these two extremes.  As old and dated as GTA SA is and looks, it's probably far far more modern than what they are thinking.

I've tried the Quake RTX game and I get a whopping 8 to 12 fps on my 1080Ti. Turn off the ray tracing, and I get 150+. Not sure if that says much of anything, I could just be a big dummy and didn't do anything right.

Inb4 they try to add RTX to competitive tournament games and the efforts all wasted because no one will want it in favour of frame rate performance.

They won’t be. Even my Titan V can’t manage Quake 2 RTX with its sheer grunt and tensor cores. I only got playable FPS at 480p.

Meh. I'm gonna go against the stream and say that there aren't really any old games that I would want to play -- with or without ray-tracing and all. There is one old game-series that I love, but I'd want a full-blown, complete do-over instead of just slightly upgraded graphics: the Legacy of Kain - series. Other than that, I just can't bring myself to care.

They will certainly be specifically designed to be unplayable on anything but Nvidia RTX hardware, the whole point being to show as big a difference as possible between that and non-RTX cards to comfort you into into thinking it's really worth it...
