Hey everyone, I just got a new cpu + ram for my older 2nd PC.
The thing is that the bios needs updating for the cpu to work with any OS.
Since I have already installed the cpu it cannot boot into any OS, I've tried Ubuntu 18 (already installed), windows 10, windows 7 and just adding the update files to a usb and seeing if it would boot.
All 4 give errors and the update files did not boot.

The hardware is:
mobo: Asus M2N-MX
cpu: Athlon 64 X2 5600+

The Asus website claims it requires a windows installation to be able to update, so since I can't boot into a installation usb, that seems impossible.
However I do have the old CPU, but I ran out of thermal paste so that's my worst case scenario.
How do I update the bios outside of an OS?
Thanks!

Use the thermal paste that is still dabbed from the new cpu.

In fact you can use it without a thermal paste, as long as the heatsink is in thigh fit.

For temporary operation it will be ok, updating bios won't heat it up.

I was thinking of doing those but the old cpu is only a single core and installing windows on it would probably be too much, so I'd rather not risk it.

Installing windows is not a demanding task. Gaming is.

Just enable the heat protection, the motherboard will shutdown itself if the cpu is overheated.

I suggest installing XP so it will be quicker, i see that asus still supports it.

Before you try anything look at Bios available for the board And see what you have

I've already done the research, mine is 0907 and the update is just a windows exe. Except I should of looked before installing the new cpu.

I've only got 7 and 10 on hand right now, I'll download try XP first and see if it works. I remember having trouble with XP demanding for a key before installing.
