Hi, I have a Asrock X570M Pro4 motherboard and a 2700X CPU with a open PCIE x16 running at PCIe 3.0 x4 speed.   I'm not sure what if I should get the LSI 9205-8i or the LSI 9207-8i controller.   The LSI 9205-8i runs at PCIe 2.0 x8 and the LSI 9207-8i x8.   Both have the x8 slot.   I would like to get the 9207-8i to be future proof but I'm not sure if I would have a better chance of the 9205-8i working.   Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, in the future when I upgrade to a 3000 AM4 CPU the PCIe slot will be running at PCIe 4.0 x4.   Does that mean it can run the LSI 9207-8i controller at PCIe 3.0 x8?   I'm not sure if that how that works.

Thanks!

David

What is the price difference?

What drives are you using?

If your using hdds, then it won't matter, the hdds will be way slower than the pcie bus.

Id get the 9207-8i for pcie 3.0 if its not much more.

Thanks for the reply.   I plan on using 4 10GB WD Red Hard drives along with 2 500GB SSD for cache with Unraid.   The price difference is between the two controllers only about $15.   I was more concern about the compatibly of running a PCI 3.0 x8 lane card in a PICE 3.0 16 slot with only x4 lanes.

If you only have 4 drives, why the hba, just use the onboard sata ports.

PCI devices will run at the slower speed of the two.

It would work the same just with 1/2 the available bandwidth but you wouldn't find yourself saturating it with HDDs so it should be fine.

x4 Gen 3 should give you ~4GB/s bandwidth. You should be covered for that HBA.
