Reallocated sector count error and RMA process for Toshiba 4TB X300 Performance HDD

i saw a ! in hwinfo64 and crystal disk info caution too...the hdd is quite new purchased on 2019-09-18...

 

Ok I edited the title so to reflect the rma process so far...

The HDD's built-in controller has this mechanism where it tries to detect bad sectors on the platters and then does some magic to remap them to a spare area. This is fine and an HDD can work for a decade or more just fine, even if the controller has to reallocate a sector. Alas, to have already 8 reallocated sectors on such a new HDD is a bad sign; back up whatever you have on it and RMA it.

I'd not use it more than nessecary for backing up and send it to be replaced.

Thats just about file system errors i believe. Those doesn't indicate something that bad as reallocated sectors.

I see...I've got the relocate error on a 2tb hdd that's why I get the 4tb 1...could it be the files that copied over cause the error?

Nope, reallocated sector count is not caused by data what is transferred.

Oh ya..does doing a full scan every day cause this? I used Kaspersky total security scan and set it to shut down after scan every day...

Not so soon definetly. HDD-s should be even a bit more durable than SSD-s.

 

But I don't have actual statistics about HDD or SSD failure rate.

Ok..I'm formatting this before rma..did a fast format..now doing a full format..at this rate is it going to take 8++hours??

~150 MB/s * 60 = 9GB per minute?

~3700GB / 9 =  411 minutes?

If my calculations are correct - less than 7 hours. But is the full format justified, maybe just delete partitions? Just formatting would not be 100% secure anyway.

Ok I'm done with the service centre.

Once you reach the service centre at:

Kaira Technologies Pte Ltd

178 Paya Lebar Road,

# 02-02, Singapore 409030

 

You just have to pass them the hdd,receipt and fill up a rma form...wait awhile and it's done.. you'll get a new hdd still with 2 years warranty...
