Which RTX graphics card suits an eGPU 40Gbps USB-C Thunderbolt 3 connection

So I've been looking at laptops and some good ones around the 1.5K USD range have a 40Gbps USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port. I want some technical knowledge on whether this is what standard external GPU enclosures (could you recommend a good one here too, please? and if they come with power supplies or I need to provide one alongside the graphics card) require and if (and if yes, which) RTX graphics card from Nvidia would work well within the bandwidth provided with an external monitor (connected to the video output of the graphics card) and without an external monitor (as in, thunderbolt port carries video output to the laptop screen as well).

Why not just go with a desktop and a cheaper laptop for mobile stuff? Can always remote into your desktop too. Would get you more performance in the end.

 

Probably don't want to go past the 2060, but why RTX specifically? You can probably find used GTX 1080s for less. or an RX 5700 should be around the same price as the 2060.

Well mostly because I want to try the ray tracing feature. 

And yes, I've considered it the other way - but most of my searches reached that point where I'm getting a thunderbolt 3 anyway. And at one point I want to have this experience, so why not. 

Talking about a laptop for mobile stuff, which wud u recommend for - an i5-U ( or an i7-U though I don't need it ) processor,  8-16gigs ram, 256-512gigs ssd storage, a touchscreen display (resolution isn't a big issue, 1920×1080 works), windows hello OR fingerprint lock and lovely battery life because I consume a lot of media content.  It's uncanny but I end up reaching a 1.5k usd mark with my pickiness. 

So.. if u wud recommend one.

Just find something with an i5 8300h/i5 9300h

Ray Tracing is kind of a joke though, and the RX 5700 or a 1080 would be faster 95% of the time.

As well Ray Tracing really wants a 2080 or better depending on the game/implementation, and I think you end up hitting bandwidth limits pretty early in the line up.

A desktop 1080 hovers around the built in mobile 1060 for performance depending on the thunderbolt connection here, and some of the chosen settings, but I think they went overkill in a lot of places testing "max" instead of just "high"
