Should I upgrade my ryzen 7 1700 to a ryzen 5 3600?

I have a Ryzen 7 1700 @ 3.7ghz paired with a gtx 1070. I used to have an rx 580 but didn't notice much of a difference when I upgraded to the 1070 so I suspect my slightly outdated cpu is holding me back a little. Would it be a good idea to upgrade to a 3600? I only game so I don't really need the extra cores afforded by a Ryzen 7. Or do you think it would be wise to hold on to the 1700 and upgrade further down the line?

I am targeting 144hz at 1080p. I mainly play destiny 2 and it will drop to 60-70 fps on occasion depending on the area, which is why I am considering upgrading.

Yeah, sounds like a good choice for an upgrade. I don't think AMD is going to support your board with their next CPU line, so I wouldn't bother waiting.

For high refresh gaming the 3600 would be a substantial increase in performance over a 1700, higher ipc and higher clockspeeds. Because of this also the 3600 would actually probably beat your 1700 even in multicore workloads, so it'd be an upgrade all around. I'd say go for it, if your main focus is gaming, the 3600 is currently the best price to performance processor on the market, can't go wrong with it.
