So I got a Rosewill Hot swap bay for my desktop that holds 4 drives. I bought a SAS controller and plugged in to the hot swap cage. Should this work. Will link to the items. When I try to boot the fans start to come on but stop almost instantly and doesn't even post. Going to try and troubleshoot some things tonight. Wondering if you guys might know if this will even work with this setup though.

Hot Swap Cage

SAS to SATA Cable

SAS Controller

Thanks,

Nate

It should. I have three of those HBA's in one of my servers and they've been fantastic. No complaints.

You bought all compatible hardware. I'd imagine trying a different PCI_e slot would be your best course of action right now.

I actually have 3 of them as well in my full tower. Has 9 x 5.25 front bays. So I pulled everything out and booted back to windows fine. Booted with just the card and work so just hooked up 1 bay and was fine then hooked the others up and is fine. Wondering if something maybe wasn't plugged in all the way. There is not a lot of room to work in this case with all of that hooked up. I actually had to replace the rear fan in the middle cage as it would not have fit with my RX 580 video card was so long. Got a slim 120mmx15mm  fan and that worked great.

Thanks for the info.

Three? That's 24 SAS/SATA ports. If you only have 12 bays why didn't you just use two? Trying to increase fault tolerance?

That's 3 cages, only 1 SAS card. 4 plug into motherboard and the other 8 to SAS card.

Oh, no, I have 3 SAS cards (HBA's - Host Bus Adapter) specifically LSI 9207-8i's. You said you had 3 as well so I got confused.

Has the system been behaving so far? All 8 ports register devices? Out of curiosity what does this system do?

So I have actually been having some issues with this computer. I disconnected the SAS controller and the mechanical drives and still getting the Random BSOD. Stop codes I took pictures of are CACHE_MANAGER, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. There where some others but didn't make note of them. I'm debating going to an Unraid setup anyways so may just do this. Also when I play Magic Arena it has been crashing randomly on my.

For context the is a new system I built upgrading my old one. I run a Plex server on it. I'm using StableBit DrivePool so I have one shared drive. Also running the StableBit Scanner tool. Plan on playing some games on it when I have time now that the system is decent.

System is:

Asus B-450-F Gaming

Ryzen 3600

500GB Intel NVME

RX580 8GB gpu

16GB Ram

EVGA 850 G+ PSU

Clean install of Windows 10 Pro

It's been a while since I've troubleshooted IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, I'd have to look it up again. I think it has something to do with drivers. Haven't tried the other.

If you're thinking of switching off Windows I would explore your free options before hopping on the UNRAID train. Open-source platforms like Debian, Fedora, & OpenSUSE can run as hypervisors, host game servers, & media share centers. It'd save you a nice chunk of money if that's something you're interested in.

So I've looked at Freenas before and even ran it for a bit. The price for Unraid is my biggest hindrance to just switching. There is a trial of it. If I can get windows to work that would honestly be the easiest.

What I've researched online about the errors I'm getting also points to driver issues. Not sure how I'm going to pinpoint what driver is causing the issue.

stevelong I'd rather keep everything in the one computer then have to setup another device for NAS.
