Nah, it will "work" on any motherboard that isn't a320. And some madlad will probably get it to work on an a320 anyways.

You just need a motherboard with a good VRM, and a bios update to support it.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

So if you don't care about taking advantage of the latest PCI-E 4.0 you could go with any AM4 socket board?

Yeah, but to be safe i would recommend not going with first gen boards(well maybe the top end ones), x470, b450, x570 are the safest choice, with x370 being ok, and some b350 ones maybe.

I definitely want to upgrade to the 3900 x or the 3950x but I can't decide on which one have they announced official release date for the 3950 x yet?

And the 3900 x will be twice as fast as what I have already I have to do some research and see what the difference between the two would be in performance if it's worth spending the extra couple hundred dollars for?

I don't understand the rationale here, why buy a high end and relatively expensive CPU and cheap out on the mobo? Get a mid tier X570 mobo at least, when I got my 3900X, I'd not even consider previous boards, and since it was a 12C/24T CPU, the lowest X570 boards I was looking at were the ASRock Taichi, the Asus X570-E Gaming.

I was also considering the top end X570 boards like the Asus Crosshair VIII Formula, and Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme. I went for the Aorus Xtreme because it had all the feature I want, plus no chipset fan, instead it uses heatpipes....that sealed the deal for me.

Not necessarily looking to cheap out I just want to make sure I have something compatible and I don't need to go out and buy the top of the line either I just know that if you don't care about PCIe 4.0 you can save a little

My main thing is I'm gonna have to do a lot of research in picking out a motherboard mainly because there are so many and from what I understand AMD supports higher RAM speeds across the board So anything I get should help with that something reliable and as long as it has m.2 slots that's all I really care about

If you don't mind me asking what do you use your 3900 x for how are you liking it so far question mark and what did you have before the 3900 x?

I got a engineering sample. Can't go into any details but the engineering sample I have does work on my x470 crosshair and gaming 7.  Just keep in mind lower end boards don't how the power system for this cpu.

Again I don't know if the retail cpu's will work in them. But for x470 I wouldn't use anything less then an aorus gaming 7 on that cpu.

Ok good to know

Is there something for power I should be on the lookout for?

On that note, is the 3950X going to get you more performance than a 3700X or 3800X? If you aren't using all 16 cores, you may get higher clock speeds out of one of the smaller CPUs.

well I don't know if I'll necessarily be using all of those cores all of the time but they will be there when I need them?

So you think a smaller CPU could perform better because it's using all cores at a higher clock speed?

From what I've seen so far, all of the Ryzens currently boost to the 4.2-4.4 range, and the current list base frequency for the 3950x is only about 3.5ghz vs the 3.8 on the 3900X, 3.9 on the 3800X and 3.6 on the 3700X and 3.8 on the 3600X.

From what I've seen, all of them perform about the same in gaming and general usage, though the six cores on the 3600X leaves it less future-proof than the others. And, between now and November, this may all change, as AMD appears to be trying to solve the clock limits they've been seeing with the current Ryzen chips.

So what does that mean question mark how are they going to fix it?...

They all may have lower clock speeds but the more cores you have is that really going to matter? Some of these chips have lower clock speeds than Intel but  they still beat Intel?

Just like how even 2st gen i7's (just sold off my i7 2600K rig, handled all the games I'd throw at it with relative ease) are still good for modern games after all this year due to HT, I'm following through with this line of thought. More cores + SMT/HT is all preferred to just same core/thread count.....to me anyway. I do light work on my PC's, like ripping, the rigs I have are more for gaming and entertainment (watching movies, NF, listening to music via Spotify and Foobar2k). So far, I am liking the performance I get out of my 3900X though I know I'm held back by my lowly VEGA64 GPU, but will upgrade to NAVI23 or an Ampere GPU next year.

Yea I think once you upgrade the GPU you should be good.... My rtx 2070 is a beast but o think the low 6 core CPU holds it back I think
