Hi guys I was hoping someone could help me with overclocking my PC. My cpu is a Ryzen 7 1700x, my motherboard is a ASUS ROG Strix X470-F Gaming, and my ram is G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600). My issue that I am having is that I seem to not be able to Overclock my computer. I have never overclocked before so I was looking online on how to and even following guidess and such anytime i adjust setting my PC either blue screen or doesnt boot fully. Can you help me figure out why it isnt OCing also possibly help me to OC it?

Have you installed Ryzen Master yet? I have, for my 3900X, and have manually OC'ed it to 4.475Ghz at 1.35v.......quite easily done with Ryzen Master.

Yea, but tbh I don't know how to use it

Start at boost clock on all core @ 1.375 vCore if it takes.  If so then run Cinebench R20, Firestrike and Prime95 to see if stable.  You can then increase MHZ by 100 and rinse/repeat the stability runs, until you find it unstable.  I am able to get the above runs at 4.1ghz @ 1.39375vCore on my R7 1700.  I can only get Firestrike pass @ 4.2ghz @ 1.4vCore.

Also, do this before you apply our DOCP/XMP profiles on your ram.  Ryzen isn't guaranteed past 2666mhz so your adding to the instability problem.  Once you have a stable CPU OC work on the ram.

Other than that its literally go to youtube and watch videos, then try, then ask a couple questions.  But mostly, try and get it done yourself or you really wont be able to have the patience for a good OC.  I have gotten both of my R7 1700's to very nice stable OCs

Initially, when I first used it, I found it confounding, really a hundinger.....but I did read some online guides to using it. Below is a screenshot of my setting (just to give you an idea, NOT suggesting you follow it exactly). The screen shot was when I had the CPU at 4.45Ghz...note that SMT is enabled, Legacy Compatibility Mode is disabled (enabling it would disable SMT (Simultaneous Multi Threading), which is AMD's equivalent of Intel's HT aka Hyper Threading)

Do note that my Memory Clock shows up as 1600Mhz, it's actually double that, mine's running at 3200Mhz effective. First gen Ryzen may have a problem going past 2666Mhz effective (actually 1333Mhz)....

So the one thing that i always find odd when i watch videos is that my master looks totally different than yours and a few others that I have seen.

Don't jump right up to 4Ghz, move in steps of, say, 25Mhz/50Mhz, and check for stability by running some gaming benchmarks.....or Cinebench R15/R20. Sometimes, an OC is stable for gaming benchmarks, but crashes on, say, Cinebench R15/R20, or vice versa. Move slowly upward, when your system crash, bump up CPU voltage....you may achieve somewhat lower than 4Ghz, do remember, not ALL CPU's are made equal.......some need less voltage, others more, some can hit 4Ghz or higher, others may not......luck of the draw in the silicon lottery. Yeah, I forgot, I hope you have a good cooler installed.....I have a 360mm AIO installed for my CPU.

Nice! Now OC in baby steps and see where you land.....

BTW, when you OC and achieve a higher OC with some voltage bump, do be aware that there's only so much you can raise the CPU voltages safely, do take note of what is considered safe voltages for your CPU and try to work within that. Don't go pumping more voltages when you hit a certain safe OC, for example, say you hit 3.85Ghz stable, you try raising CPU speed more by pumping voltages, and it still isn't stable or you get BSOD, or the program freezes, then stop and back down to that safe 3.85Ghz mark.

Yea that's what I'm doing. I don't think I can get 4ghz. So I might settle at around 3.8/3.9. I might be upgrading my cpu to a ryzen 9 3900x later this year tho

If it behaves anything like my 3900X, my idle temps fluctuates from high 30's to high 40's, when I game, it hits about 70C or so.....do check on what's safe for your 1700X.

Also what happens if cinebench errors out?

idling at 40C-ish is fine, the fins on cooler is cold anyway.

under full load, i suggest 90C max and roll back to 80C at daily use

The funny thing is, I did have some errors with CB initially when I tried OCing, tried UT3 and Metro Exodus and they ran fine.....so, kinda hard to say for sure. Below is the last score I'd gotten when I was OC'ing and checking stability in CB and games....at 4.475Ghz, CB just stopped and closed. But I play games like Metro Exodus, UT3, Gears 5, Strange Brigade at 4.475Ghz and there isn't an issue, so what can I say?

I could try for more stability by pumping the CPU voltage, but 4.475Ghz at 1.35v stable for games is good enough for me.
