GTX 1070 running on Corsair 430w?? Maybeee?

Go to solution Solved by RollinLower,

i think it should be possible. i run 2 1070's in my Folding server and under load it pulls about 400-430 watts.\

so a single 1070 should be good on 430 watts.

you should really think about upgrading that PSU eventually though

So i found a few amazing deals on GTX 1070s on ebay for just under 200 pounds and iam really itching to buy one to replace my R7 370 2GB but im really not sure if my PSU can handle it. My specs are

Ryzen 7 1700

Gigabyte AX370M DS3H Motherboard

12GB DDR4 2666 mhz RAM

240GB Kingston SSD

1TB WD Blue HDD

Radeon R7 370 2gb

Corsair CX 430 Bronze Power Supply (Green Label Variant)

Any help would be great thanks as this is an amazing deal and if i have to buy a new PSU my budget will be reduced to like 120 pounds, making an rx 570 or 1060 3gb the best i can afford, and it still wont be much of an upgrade from my current GPU ive been stuck on for eternity.

Main Rig: Ryzen 7 1700, 12 GB, RX 580 8 GB  Second Rig: FX-8150, 16 GB, R9 290 4 GB

Third Rig: FX-6100, 16 GB, GTX 780 Ti 3 GB  Twin HP Compaq Elite 8200 Towers: i7 2600 (x2), 16 GB (x2), HD 5450 1 GB (x2)

Considering that your R7 370 almost consumes as much power as a 1070 it can work.

will it work? yes

do i recommend doing it? no, cx430 is quite old for todays standards

thanks, but surely a power supply being old shouldn't make a difference right? and also i have only had the power supply for just under 3 years

well, standards change

the problem i can see here happening is that you load the 12v rail too much, while the 5v too little, what causes the 5v to go out of spec. this is why dc-dc regulation is preferred these days.

better safe than sorry with this kind of stuff

it's hard to explain easily

let's keep it on that it's bad if it happens, and I'd just upgrade it for your use, as it can happen in your situation

as well that it starts whining, but that's just annoying, not dangerous

hmmm ok, so do you think that if i use this psu with a 1070 for a few months until i have enough money to upgrade it will be okay?

i personally would do it as soon as possible

what you do is on own risk, it can be that nothing happens, it can be that something does happen, i can't say that in advance
