Will it fit and flow?

Go to solution Solved by TempestCatto,

For the weary internet traveler: I settled on using the Wraith Prism cooler that came with my 2700x (as I used a different cooler for the 2700x). It sits flush with motherboard like I need, will fit in a 3U chassis, and cools the cpu and vrms very well. Keeps the FX 8320 at 50C with a 4.2GHz overclock (not sure on voltage tho).

UPDATE: I'm at 4.4Ghz at 1.36 volts around 50C in Aida64, ambient room temp 23C. I swapped mobos for an MSI 990FXa after replacing the thermal pads on the VRM's. I could push it further, but meh. It's stable and I'm happy :3

Hi all! I have a couple quick questions.

Long story short, I'm building a PC inside this case: https://www.newegg.com/black-istarusa-e-40/p/N82E16811165562

And want to use this CPU cooler: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079NXZQBC/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

The place to mount it would be the front of the case, I know it will fit size wise (and I know I'll have to remove the drive bays). But my question is, will the tubing reach that far? From a standard ATX board. Also, the board I'm using (specs below) gets really hot. Would it be advisable to take the fan that comes with the case and drill holes in the top/side panel and mount the fan in the appropriate spot? Should it be intake or exhaust? There's really not much in the way of exhaust for this case. Should I just buy some Noctua fans and drill holes in the appropriate areas instead?

Basic Specs:

Motherboard: Biostar TA970 (ATX)

CPU: AMD FX 8320 (will be kept stock)

RAM: G.Skill Trident X 2x8gb 1866mhz

Thanks!

If you're going to use a 4U case, then get a 4U cooler like a noctua U9s. Better temps, cheaper, better quality.

I should have stated the reason I don't want an air cooler. This case will be installed in a mobile 20U rack that gets moved between places over rough terrain. I want to keep as much weight off of the CPU mount as possible to avoid damage.

The get a low profile cooler like a noctua l9x65, people use those in lan rigs and its fine. You will move the server, and there will be a sharp edge on a part of the case that will hit the hose and eventually, you'll have a broken server and a fire.

Problem there being, the 8320 is a 125w TDP chip, and that cooler only goes up to 95w TDP. The H60 doesn't have a defined TDP (that I could find) but review sites claim it can handle far more. So H60 should be a better cooler, only in this case.

Also, fire? Really? I mean, I don't know about that. Most circuits will just trip when shorted. Besides that, there's no sharp corners or edges in the case for it to snag on.
