So currently I have a I7 6700K, i want to be upgrading to a Ryzen 7 3700x. I also have a 1080 ROG GPU

I game alot at 1440P 144Hz, and will want to do a little bit of streaming/video editing on the side. Not alot.

Will this be an upgrade worth it? Or am I better spending my money elsewhere?

it wouldn't really help with gaming, but it would help with streaming and video editing. If you decide that better streaming and video editing is worth 500$, then you should do it.

What case/psu/storage? If you're still using a hard drive, then an SSD would be a good upgrade, if you have a ugly case, spending 50-100$ to get a much nicer one might be worth it, if you think that it's worth it.

To me, not worth it. The additional mem latency from ryzen chips and the lower core clock still make 6700k good for most things.

Doesn't seem like much upgrade to me, 4 additional core at lower clock and increased mem latency. However I would jump on a 32c64t threadripper (if it can oc to 4.3ghz+) or the 64c128t ones depends on the price. That would make a more sensible upgrade to me.

there's no additional memory latency with Ryzen, it's just more sensitive to memory speed.

clock speed isn't a factor, because Ryzen has higher instructions per clock, so the 3700X is faster than the 6700K, although not by a lot.

Are you sure it's your CPU that's holding you back?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

If you don't need more than 4 cores it's not worth it.

For streaming another 2 cores would be nice, as it will leave your 4 cores purely for gaming.

Maybe you can keep it until Ryzen 4000 with 4 multithreads.

Better spent on getting better GPU or memory.

There ARE additional latency to ryzen 3000 even compare to ryzen 1000. The infinity fabric is no longer connected between CCD, they are now only connected to IO die, increasing latency. And due to the ryzen design of CCX-CCD, the ryzen memory latency is around (edit 1.5?) times higher than intel (18 core and less).

Many things to consider when doing memory/L3 latency test, I haven't checked to see if anyone done extensive testing yet. It's getting better tho with ryzen 3000.

Get your fact straight before commenting something like that, you will end up confusing others.

False,

9900k memory latency (9900k should have the same latency as a 6700k, if not more due to more cores acessing the memory)

and thats with 3200mhz ram CL16

I've been trying to run games on ultra settings and 1440P, its most probably my GPU holding my system back right? On games like csgo ect it gets more than enough frames, as soon as I go to overwatch, gta ect that's when I can only get 110 frames max

Cool, I will edit my answer, it is not as big as I originally thought, I must be looking into threadripper 3000. thx for the info.

Almost certainly your GPU. You can easily verify this by installing MSI Afterburner or just the RivaTuner Statistics component. Activate the in game overlay for GPU utilization or simply view the chart of usage. If usage is 95% or higher it is a GPU bottleneck.

You can just use NVENC for basic streaming so there's less load on the CPU.

More than likely just wait for like a Ryzen 4000 in like a year or whatever. Unless you just really want the R7 3700X right now, but it's not a major upgrade for just gaming.

I found a nice improvement in my gaming going from 6700k to 8086k. It didn't increase average framerates in what I play, but it certainly helped with the lows. Having said that, I would aim to get a GPU upgrade along with the CPU.

Then you wont need to turn a few settings down to keep framerates up.

That is a lot of money to go from high settings to ultra, without much visual improvement.

GTX 1080 is not a 1440p/144fps GPU.

It's not the whole story but even if you upgrades to the best CPU you won't get where you want to he on that GPU.

In those cases check what fps your cpu can get with 720p low settings as some games may be CPU limited, then just adjust your 1440p settings down a peg.

It is defiantly a GPU bottleneck, just loaded up some games and checked. What GPU does everyone reccomend for 1440p 144hz gaming?

What game(s)? You can't run ultra, but you should be able to do medium-high perfectly fine.

I'd wait for the upcoming "Big Navi" GPUs anyways, if it ends up being a $599-799 2080-2080ti

Dunno where it might end up, but it'll probably be cheaper than RTX GPUs, or force a slight price drop from Nvidia.

Depend on game; even a 2080 ti isn't doing 144fps at 1440p in Borderlands 3 ultra

Imo adjust settings and your expectations and you'll be better off.
