Can you revive 2/4 dead cores?

Badpcman

Hello I am new to the site im wondering is there a way to fix a cpu that 2 out of the 4 cores died i have no thermal paste sadly because studies are drying my money fast.I have a CPU Type
AMD Athlon(tm) X4 860K Quad Core Processor and its a quite old pc that i normally use with a radeon r9 270x.

Dead cores, this is a first for me, on a still working CPU.

Where are you getting the information you have dead cores? If task manager is reporting "parking" of cores, change your Windows power plan so it does not park cores it decides you don't need to use.

Or could be a BIOS bug causing this I guess

Thermal paste won’t fix ‘dead’ cores.. How do you know your cores are dead? Sure it isn’t disabled somewhere in the bios

"dead cores" ? That moment when you thought you've seen it all. The cores very likely are disabled within the BIOS. Second possibly might be physical damage, but this is unlikely as then probably the whole CPU would fail.

I would check for a BIOS update on your rig (see what BIOS revision you are running) and make sure its on the latest BIOS, or reinstall the BIOS.  Doing some google-fu showed that a buggy BIOS can cause this (Ive personally witnessed buggy BIOS's and can attest that it does happen, Ive had mine revert back to old Overclock settings before.  Even after fresh window installs and changing the BIOS back to default).

That gives me another idea - pull the CMOS battery for 30 seconds and reset your BIOS put the battery back in, does this fix it?

I cant get on discord atm, just got home and have kids just touching a few PC things real quick.  Google how to pull a CMOS - its literally a large watch battery on your motherboard, super simple.  Turn off and unplug PC for safety, and just pull it out...wait 30 seconds...put it back in, turn PC on.  Will reset BIOS which may be what is causing your lack of cores showing up.

What are you using to determine you have 2 dead cores?

Task manager, because that is the only thing that i know that specifies the amount of cores in a pc.But every game thinks its a 4 core cpu.But im sure its running on 2 cores.I think ever since i changed to windows 10 pro it started with that.

The Athlon X4 "quad core" is a 2c/4t chip, just like how "8 core" Bulldozer chips are really 4c/8t. Windows is reporting it correctly. Everything's normal.

Athlon X4 doesn't have SMT : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlon_X4

And for Bulldozer, it's same, not SMT but 2 ALU and 1 FPU per module. For 8 cores, it's for 8 ALU but with only 4 FPU. That's why give it 4 modules / 8 cores...

Task Manager is a terrible diagnostics tool. Download "HWMonitor". It's free software and you'll be able to see the percentage of utilization of all cores.

In addition, in Task Manager while in the CPU tab, right click on the CPU and "change graph to" then "logical processors"

Intel Core i7 9700F / Cooler Master 212 Evo / GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER / 16 GB G.SKILL RAM @ 2666MHz / GA-B365M-DS3H / EVGA 500w PSU

Right click within that graph shown above, then change graph to logical processors and you'll be able to see utilization of each core or thread.

IIRC, the 860K is a true quad, like the A10 processor it's based on.

Your cpu is not even at 100%, your bottleneck seems to be your GPU at this point. Scroll down and observe the GPU utilization.
