WiFi extender, but from using an Ethernet cable?

Currently I am in college, and the WiFi in my dorm is just horrid. From my room I am sometimes receiving only 2 Mbps down. I do have an Ethernet access point within my room, but that doesn't give me much luck with my laptop or phone. Is there someway in which I can use an Ethernet port to set up a router or WiFi extender in order to make a private connection point for my roommate and I?

Check the terms and service, most colleges won't let you use your own wifi access points, and have the network setup to block access to ports that a access point is connected to.

If there isn't an issue, you can buy a wifi access point, which is exactly what you want here. Or you can just by a wifi router
