It's true that you can change your RX Vega 56 into Vega 62?

I just bought a MSI Vega 56 Airboost card 2 week ago for 250 CAD, it was a really good deal.

I checked with GPU-Z it has Samsung HBM2 memory, which is the same one used in all Vega 64 cards, which is good news since hynix/micron HBM2 doesn't run well when apply Vega 64 voltage/frequency on it.

Then I downloaded a Reference Vega 64 vbios, and used ATIFlash to flash it.

Vega 56 is dual bios, and reference edition locks the second bios to read only, which basically means you cannot accidentally flash both vbios to wrong ones, result in you bricking the card.

 

However flashing vega 64 vbios simply unlock HBM2 voltage, doesn't unlock any additional hardware. I know online people said they unlocked like 1 SM or some said 2 SM resulting it become a Vega 57, but I haven't seen anything like it.

 

Overall it's just something fun you can do, if you get a blower card, it's gonna sound like a jet engine with vega 64 bios.

 

Undervolting is another story on its own.

I just went to check online, apparently it is a glitch in gpu-z to show more than 56 CU.

There's no guarantee on how many extra CUs you can unlock, so I won't bet on that.

 

Besides 5700XT is also competitive against the Vega cards, it performs like a Vega 64 with access to features like Radeon Image Sharpening and lower power draw. There are also more good custom cards for the 5700XT than the Vega cards.
