Hi all. Been going back and forth on this and I am looking for some second (and third. And forth. And...) opinions. I got a Latitude E6410 running Win10 (8g ram, Intel Core i5-480M) that is in good shape. Mostly use it for writing or as a remote term for my main system and for those tasks it does alright. The CPU can keep up for the most part. However, booting is painful with the slow HDD and navigating the OS can be like walking through molasses in sub freezing temps. My CPU rarely peaks over 25% but my disk usage is almost always maxed. And because of this I have been playing around with the idea of getting a SSD.

It would not need to be particularly big, enough for the OS and a few core programs like Scrivener and Sapien Powershell Studio. I mean you can get a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB for about $80 on Amazon. But is it worth it to get an SSD for a laptop that is nearly ten years old? Sure, it isn't showing its age just yet, but for how much longer will it last? And would I even see a benefit? What are your thoughts?

Yea a ssd will still make a huge difference on a older system. Id get a 860 evo as its the newer and cheaper model if you want samgsung, but really id personally just get a cheap ssd here, the extra performance won't matter

Well, if you use this device on a daily basis to perform necessary tasks, and store valuable data on your laptop. Yes it is very much worth it to pick up an SSD, esp. since you can just transfer that SSD to a new laptop when you choose to purchase one. But assuming you live in the U.S.  I recommend picking up this better value SSD instead.

Thanks for the input.

Not looking for extra performance, Samsung is just what I usually go with for tower builds and I trust their quality.  Are there some cheaper brands I could be looking at?

Yes, if you are in the US I recommend this one from ADATA another well known quality brand, it has twice the storage, and is only $50 USD.

How long it'll last is always the big question.  An SSD is never a bad investment though.  If the laptop fails, you can always put the SSD in another machine, or you can put it in a 2.5" USB3 enclosure and use it as a fast external drive.

You'll definitely see a benefit if you're using Windows 10.  That OS likes to read and write a lot, especially shortly after boot.

As for which brand, I never had any issues with Samsung or Crucial.  Heard good things about Adata too.
