Is it okay to use 2 m.2 SSD?

Hello, I am wondering if it is okay to use 2x m.2 type SSD, if using both m.2 sockets would throttle my pcie lane and reduce my GPU performance.

I am currently using a 250gb 970 Evo Pro samsung m.2 ssd on my 1st socket. Planning to add a 1tb Crucial p1 m.2 ssd onto my 2nd m.2 socket. Just concerned if that could throttle my pcie lane and reduce gpu performance.

 

This is on my Strix x470F motherboard

Usually M.2 drives share bandwidth with SATA or PCIE x1 not PCIE x16

nah it doesn't, the two PCIe x16 slots and top M.2 slot get lanes directly from the CPU, the rest get from the chipset.

No. the GPU won't throttle as it gets an exclusive 16lanes directly to the CPU.

And it's a plenty of highway, as it usually only use 8 lanes max.

The two M.2 however may have different lanes to the cpu or/and the chipset depending on the motherboard.

Whichever, they won't disturb the gpu bandwidth.

Sorry I am new to this. I have no clue what the manual is saying. What is raid array? Is it saying that it will use a different pcie lane for my 2 m.2 ssd that wont intervene with my gpu lane? Also is the mentioned x8 or x4 mode better?

It's okay you will get x8 speeds on GPU if both M.2 is populated. If you only use the lower (2nd slot, actually named as first slot M2_1) you will get x16 on GPU

Thank you. When you mean the lower 2nd slot, is that the one with the built in cooling mount cover for the m.2 ssd?

No the other one. Sorry it's marked M.2_2 on your board. Its the same config on my Crosshair VII hero
