Advice Required - New Build mostly Gaming, maybe some intro video/photo, £1250 UK based

I havent built a machine for 8yrs, and havent really played a PC game since F.E.A.R, but was looking to get back into it, and ditch the PS4.

The machine would be mainy for gaming, but I would maybe like to learn/dapple with video/photo editing, and I am currently doing digital forensics stuff so am using VMs. I may be able to use my laptop for some of it and leave desktop solely for gaming (FPS mainly), or maybe not, I am not sure.

What I currently have

Monitor - Samsung CJ791 34" 100Hz 3440x1440

Headset - A50s

Keyboard + Mouse - K520 + M310

XPS 13 2 in 1 (i7-1065G7, 32GB 3733 LPDDR4, 1TB PCIe NVMe, IRUS plus Graphics, 13.4" 16:10 UHD+ WLED touch display 3840 x 2400)

Out going desktop

I5 2500k

MSI P67A-GD53 (B3)

Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Car

4 x 8GB Trident X PC3-19200 2400MHz

EVGA Supernova 750 B2 SM 80+ bronze (purchased july 2015)

Be Quiet Dark Rock advanced

Antec 300 Three Hundred two case

Can anything be salvaged from this, not bothered about rgb or fancy case, it will be under a desk with the left side against desk side.

Looking at spending £1k, plus whatever i get for the above individually on ebay, have all the boxes, but not even sure I will get anything.

Going off of LTT cheap v expensive gaming video, I was looking at the gentleman.

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (guessing it would now make sense to go for the 3600 - £183)

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB WINDFORCE OC 3X Video Card - £499

Corsair H55 57 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler - £55

Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory - £78 (Should this be upped to 32?)

Asus ROG strix B450-F - £115

Kingston A1000 m.2 NVME 480GB £65

Corsair CXM 750W 80+ Bronze - £81 ( Can i use my current PSU, 650W not on pcpartpicker)

Fractal Design Focus G - £51 inc shipping (any slim chance I could use my current case)

Total = £1125 inc shipping

Keyboard and mouse are another discussion (not to be included in £1k budget).

The UK seems to be pretty expensive for parts, and I am probably looking towards november to buy, will there be any deals (black friday, christmas sale, etc), or could i just buy when I see a good deal over the next 2 months?

Cheers

jim

Hi

The R5 3600 does make more sense.

You might be able to reuse your cooler if you can get an AM4 bracket from BeQuiet. Otherwise an Arctic Freezer 34 esports duo is a good cooler for 30 odd quid. Don't waste £55 on that Corsair H55.

https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/PnPKHx/arctic-freezer-34-esports-duo-cpu-cooler-acfre00061a

A 5700XT is way better value than the 2070 Super. A bit less performance but usually around £80+ cheaper. This Gigabyte Gaming OC for example is a good version for £413.

I would swap out the board for an MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX.

Your current EVGA psu isn't the best thing but you can reuse it for a system like this. If it is working ok then keep it. Same goes with the case if you are happy with it. Not sure what the cpu cooler max is with it, but you can get smaller air coolers like the Cryorig H7. The gpu length is quoted at 318mm max in the review below. The Gigabyte 5700XT is 279mm.

Not sure how good/bad that Kingston SSD is. You can get the Sabrent Rocket though for less money.

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor    £301.97
CPU Cooler     ARCTIC Freezer 34 eSports DUO CPU Cooler    £36.99
Motherboard        Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE ATX AM4 Motherboard    £189.38
Memory        Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory    £103.96
Storage        Sabrent Rocket 512 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive    £59.99
Video Card        Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2080 8 GB AORUS Video Card    £694.49

Total - £1390

Would this be a good enough jump in performance to justify the extra spend?

IS there better parts for the price from the ones above, not sure what ram to choose, but saw the vengeance pro in a review, couldnt find non rgb ones.

Does this give room to get extra out of over clocking?

Thanks again.

The Ryzen cpu's don''t really overclock that well, and in any case you are better off letting it do it's own thing with precision boost. So it comes down to whether you want a board that can handle a 3900X/3950X i.e The Gigabyte one for future upgrades. The Tomahawk would be borderline for the 3900X and I wouldn't put a 3950X in it without a high rpm fan over the VRM. Of course you also get pcie 4.0 with X570 but unless you want to run a pcie 4.0 SSD then not really needed.

As for Ram have a look at the Crucial Ballistix Sport LT. Really good value for money and it overclocks well. You want to look for a kit that has 'AES' in the part number like the one below.

With the £80 i woukd save now between the cost of the two boards, if i did decide to upgrade cpu, which woukd be for a number of years, then there would probably be a mew mobo for £100.

I will read the reviews for each part now, and hopefully order start of next week.

Still in two minds whether to get a new case, would probably like a smaller one than the antec which is 513mm x 229mm x 471mm

So, today was the day all my shot was to arrive.

As you can see, it didnt.

I got a email late last night from scan to say there was a delay picking my gpu (supposedly it was damaged and it was the last one). For no extra charge i will now be getting the RTX super 8gb ventus oc, and other stuff delivered tomorrow before 12.

Did i get a good deal, as the rtx 2080 aorus looked a decent card?

The Gigabyte Aorus is the better card, but obviously a 2080 Super should be a touch faster than a regular 2080.

If I remember correctly the 'Ventus' isn't the best cooler in the world. I would take a regular Gigabyte Windforce or Gaming OC over one.

The Ventus is going for £708.98 on scans website

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-geforce-rtx-2080-super-ventus-oc-8gb-gddr6-ray-tracing-graphics-card-3072-core-1650mhz-gpu-1830m

I would say pay an extra £21 and get the Gigabyte Gaming OC instead if they will let you do that. You get 4 years warranty that way when registered instead of 3.

https://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigabyte-geforce-rtx-2080-super-gaming-oc-8gb-gddr6-ray-tracing-graphics-card-3072-core-1650mhz-gpu

Other option would be to get a refund and buy the 2080 elsewhere.

Sadly, i went with the card. Got it for £683 though.

I am pretty impatient, and got to get these bought before they skyrocket after brexit ?

Another day, another @scancomputers mess up.

Today i received a motherboard, cpu fan, and a camera, no gpu. They wont even look at resolving this until the camera has been sent back to them, probably monday they will receive it. They did take the full amount out my bank account two days ago.
