Hi guys,

I have two identical systems except for the the storage (HDD & SSD's) and the Graphics cards.

One is my personal work computer and the other is my gaming PC (it's quite a powerful little work PC ?)

I just want to switch my Mobo's around in each pc as I am in the process of selling my Gaming computer and my Work pc has been more recently built.

The main reason for this is because my Mobo for my work pc is still under warranty (and i have the receipt) and my gaming pc is not.

My main concern is that I will lose all of my work stuff, Drive File Stream, Connective Mercury, Outlook, Microsoft stuff etc .I am wondering what will actually reset or get deleted? I know the files on my HDD and SSD shouldn't get effected but I just don't know what happens.

As i said my CPU, RAM, Motherboard, case and even the PSU are identical.

I am sorry as this is probably a really stupid questions but It's just because I run my own business and am extremely worried of losing things.

Let me know what's the dealio ?

Great thanks guys. I dont have raid so everything should be right.

What if I simply take off the whole Mobo (Including RAM and CPU) will this do anything?

Will i have to reinstall windows?

Newer Windows are a bit more receptive to hardware changes, so not necessary to reinstall Windows. But if you notice any performance drops that weren't there before, you should do a clean install as Windows doesn't have a 100% hit rate

I have looked at a few things online and it says that I have to transfer my Windows 10 to each mobo? Both systems are operating on Win10 currently but a few articles have said that the OS will not recolonise or that it is only registered to the certain mobo

Thats just the license, you can always extract the key using CMD, record it down somewhere. Do all the parts transfer, if its reactivates on its own its fine, otherwise just input the key and reactivate it again.

Or if its already linked to your Microsoft account, just login.

I'm in a similar position. Running a 1080ti with a intel 6500 on a z170 board, ready to upgrade CPU + motherboard to Ryzen. Am I able to just switch mobo + CPU and be good to go?

Didn't wanna make another thread, thanks!

While technically you should be fine, I don't know if crossing platforms (different chipsets/drivers and all) would make Windows freak out.

Just have a backup ready anyway in case Windows does freak out, then you can just proceed with a fresh install without worrying about your data.
