AMD, now with a leather coat - Surface Laptop 3 Leak suggests multiple 4, 6 and 8-core AMD configs

A new leak picked up by NoteBookCheck.com suggest the upcoming Surface Laptop 3 15" will come with some rather OP ULV CPUs - namely, 6 and 8 core Zen-based CPUs. Whether this will be Zen+, Zen2 (likely) or Epyc embedded SoCs is up in the air as of writing this.

Are hexacore and octa-core AMD Ryzen powered versions of Surface Laptop 3 on the way? That is the latest rumor according to Roland Quandt at WinFuture, who is well known for the reliability of his leaks and tips. Quandt claims to have received an excerpt from a US pricing list for the allegedly upcoming 15-inch version of the Surface Laptop 3, on which we have previously reported. According to Quandt, the series will cost as follows:

image.png.7f4cf0d738b97868a88b25d4efe862f1.png

Quote

Quandt also opines that it would be unlikely for AMD to power six or eight Zen+ cores with a 15 W thermal design power (TDP) like it does with the Ryzen 5 3550U and Ryzen 7 3750U. He claims that a potential solution to this would be to use EPYC Embedded 3000 series processors instead, which offer up to eight Zen cores using between 25 W and 55 W TDPs.

My thoughts you ask? This is either going to push ULV-based ultrabooks into true mobile workstation territory or will just be another low-clocked mess like the six-core Intel ULV CPU that launched a few weeks ago (Quick Primer - base clock is 1.1GHz and it's having trouble going much over that in prolonged work due to power limits)

To my knowledge AMD doesn't have any Ryzen Mobile CPUs that have 6 or 8 cores

It would be interesting if they released new mobile processors for this, but I think this might be some bad info.

Well, the source has been correct in the past and the 15" Surface Laptop 2 is basically confirmed so a Zen2-based machine wouldn't be unrealistic if AMD decide to use the Surface Line as a flagship for Zen2 mobile (quite likely if you ask me)

The 3550U appears to be a lower TDP variant of the 3550H, and that's a Zen+ chip. If true, to me that's a bit of a disappointment given the power consumption, thermal and performance benefits that Zen 2 allows for. While Zen+ is no slouch, Zen 2 would've been perfect.

On the topic of hex-cores and octa-cores though, I'm really interested. AMD hasn't yet pushed high core count Ryzen onto mobile platforms, and I'm excited to see what they can do.

Renoir, the next set of APUs, has been getting driver inclusions and is really close to launch. This is actually the window in which AMD launched both sets of Zen mobile parts. Though it's very possible those are just Zen2 CPUs + a mobile GPU rather than a full APU setup.

Yeah, the APU naming scheme has always been off one gen. Hopefully the 4000 series are a massive jump given Zen2's ridiculous efficiency at low clocks

Isn't Renoir on AMD's roadmap for 2020 though? That's what I've seen so far.

Well we're not far off - could be launched a bit earlier for holiday season if AMD and MS have struck some sort of deal

well that mostly depends on the IO development at glofo and production yields at TSMC.

as CPU dies is probably being produced as much as possible.

True but the orders are usually months in advance so the current production capacity is unlikely to affect products for another 4-5 months

AMD ryzen mobile name is more understandable than Intel 10th gen mobile cpu name.

I don't care what you say.

I have used your name in regular speech in my day to day activities since seeing your name.  It gave me an ability to accurately describe myself, so because of that - anything I see you say I like.  Until I don't but that hasn't happened yet ;)

it really comes down to yields. as you get an awful lot of CPU dies from a single wafer.

also i doubt other people other than Apple or perhaps qualcomm get ahead of AMD in terms of orders.

It's worth noting - there has been substantial chatter about Navi 14 and the upcoming RX 5500 and 5300 series so I wouldn't be surprised if there is an even smaller RX 5100 for APU use. Probably plenty of defective 5300s and 5500s to feed into an APU

The Desktop APU, yes, but AMD actually launched the 2000 mobile parts in October 2017. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-vega-10-mobile.c3053 It started showing up in some laptops by December. The Desktop APU launch started in February 2018. We're right in the window for that to happen with the Renoir APU, especially since we're expecting the desktop APU in Spring 2020.

its a touch close to the launch of the 3000 series mobile tho. so unless this is a more limited run (which is unlikely given the IO die requirement). it would be odd.

24 CU die might be a tad large tho. tho it shouldnt be much larger than the Ryzen CPU die if i remember correctly

Could always be cut-down - or they could use Vega 20 like in the Apple MacBook Pros but on 7nm

im talking size-wise here. this CPU + IO + either PCIe GPU or other solution needs to be relativly small, it really can be too big.
