I’m new to this forum but I was very active on ncix forums a very long time ago. I still follow linus’ videos on YouTube though :)

im looking to build my 2nd rig. I gave my 1st away a while back and have been using a Mac for the last 5 years. I’m looking to get back into pc gaming since I’ve gotten bored of console gaming. I’m not an enthusiast by any means but I do appreciate quality and don’t mind spending more if it means I will benefit from it, within reason of course. I will be starting with Overwatch and CS but will eventually move to other games since I’ll have a computer that can handle games. I don’t intend on constantly upgrading the parts unless something fails or they are simply outdated (not being able to handle all games at ultra is NOT outdated)

As for peripherals, they will come later but I’m looking to game on at least a 1440p IPS display.

Here’s what I have so far....

CPU - i7-9700k (or save some $$ with i5-9600k?)

Mobo - Asus rog Maximus hero OR Aorus ultra/master

Cooling - Corsair h100i + a couple ll120’s

RAM - 2x8 Corsair vengeance rgb OR g.skill trident z rgb

GPU - Asus strix rtx 2070 OR Gigabyte Aorus rtx 2070

Storage - Samsung evo plus 1tb m.2 nvme

CPU - Asus ROG Thor 850w

Case - ??? Any suggestions?

Id appreciate all input and suggestions. I’ve been out of the loop for a while and this is what I’ve come up with in the last day of catching up with pc world

*****EDIT*****

After a bit more reading and consideration of the suggestions here, i have revised my build and added prices (in canadian dollars)

CPU - i7-9700k ($498)

COOLING - Corsair H115i Pro ($209)

MOBO - Gigabyte Aorus Pro WIFI ($265)

RAM - Corsair 2x8gb vengeance pro rgb ($130)

GPU - Gigabyte Aorus RT 2060 SUPER ($595)

STORAGE - Samsung 970 evo name 1tb ($230)

CPU - Corsair RMX 850W ($165)

CASE - Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic ($194)

TOTAL - $2286

I would recommend doing a U turn and going AMD.

Their R5 3600 chip easily competes with Intel's current i7's, not to mention it's priced much friendlier.

What's your budget and location? 1440p 60 fps?

Just taking a quick glance at your list I'd:

  • Go with AMD as they're newest chips are pretty powerful
  • At least get the 2070 Super, unless you're saving a great deal by going with the regular 2070
  • Don't bother with an expensive NVME drive, get a cheaper one
  • Don't get a super expensive motherboard, even the mid range ones are super solid
  • With the money saved I'd consider getting 32GB of RAM, since it's quite cheap right now

Someone will probably take the time to piece together a full parts list. You should list budget, where you're from, what you'll be doing, etc.

Welcome to the forum.

32 GB is overkill and all he does is plays games. 16GB will be plenty enough.

Yeah, dont get a overkill SSD 256gb or 128gb will be enough for you and pair it with a HDD 1TB or more.

He meant NVMe is overkill. As for SSD size a 128GB or 256GB is too small. You should be aiming for 500GB or above.

I was reluctant going amd since I’ve always been more familiar with Intel, but I see a lot of good reviews on these Ryzen chips

as for budget..it’s not set in stone but I’d prefer to stay under 2k for the tower. I live in Toronto. peripherals will be bought after

Welcome to the forum.

I live in Toronto and from what I’ve seen, prices on the 2070 seem to be better than 2070 super.

whats considered expensive for an nvme? I can pick up a Samsung 970 evo 1tb for 230 on amazon. I know I can get a regular 2.5 ssd for much cheaper but I like the performance increase going with an nvme. Like I said in my first post, I’m mainly a Mac user so I have all my files over there. This build will mainly be used for gaming and multimedia

im leaning towards the aorus ultra since reviews have said its great for what you get and I would like something I can re-use down the road

ram is fairly cheap from the prices I’ve seen. ~130 for 2x8 and ~250 for 2x16. I will eventually max out all 4 slots...it’s just a matter of whether or not I want 32gb or 64gb in the end

32gb is definitely overkill but the more the merrier right? :)

I will likely go with a Samsung 970 evo 1tb nvme. It’s on sale now since the evo plus has been released. I don’t plan on storing a whole lot on the pc

Not necessarily. All I do is play games, and with quite a few games I hit the 16GB wall because of the way I use my system; I often have many, many tabs open at the same time in the background. Going forward I could see this only getting worse, so for me, 32GB would be what I'd be aiming for on my next build...even though I "only" play games.

I wouldn't get a 256GB SSD. They're tiny, run out of space rapidly, and are slower.

At the prices they're currently at for flash memory, you might as well get 32GB of RAM and a 1TB (or greater) SSD.

Might as well cash in before the prices go back up.

You won't see any gains from NVME. They benchmark faster...and that's it. Synthetics very rarely translate into real world performance.

Interesting..is this really the case? From all the tests I've seen, even on the low end of nvme, they're at least 3x faster than 2.5" SSDs.

To be honest, i've only used the ssd's supplied in my macs (MacBook pro retina + iMac) and they're great. No complaints about their speed but i was under the impression NVME would be a lot faster, which is why i leaned towards it

In synthetics, sure. In real life load times or anything like that? Yeah, not so much.

thank you both for the build suggestions. I swapped out some of my parts based on these builds but I also realized that there were certain things I really wanted in the build that I don't want to settle for. Yes, I'm spending more than I should be but I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon and knowing myself, I don't want to settle for less than what I want.

The two things im really debating still on the build are the cpu and gpu. I want to stay intel and nvidia (personal preference)

For the cpu, I can't decide if i should go i5 (8600k vs 9600k) or i7 9700k

GPU, rtx 2060 super vs 2070 super vs rtx 2080 super.

At this point, I'm not too worried about the price, its more about what's the better bang for the buck
