i got this GIF from BaiduTieba, i think it;s a great Gif showing how thermal pastes spreads after u push the cooler on. 

i did not record the URL of the original photographer, will attach credits when i got it.

Would be interesting to see this done with a more sophisticated setup for equal mounting pressure and some amount of reproducibility, that might stop all the "pea sized vs line" debate.
