A lower resolution is just going to reveal what the limit of your CPU is.

Just grab an R5 3600 with some 3600mhz RAM sometime maybe. or just wait for B550 boards, no idea when those will be out though. Probably with the R5 3500X and below.

Just check the motherboard's supported memory list.

Yeah, I get that. Like I said, I bumped things down to 'confirm' as I was seeing the issue at 1440p as well. Appreciate the help.

Long story short; I recently changed my OC settings on my CPU and GPU and I'm now seeing (what appears to be) a CPU bottleneck in some of my games. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, for example, I'm seeing GPU usage as low as 40% and CPU usage as high as 100%, which seems odd to me as I don't remember having issues like this previously. I currently have an i5-8600K and a GTX 1080 Ti FTW3. The CPU is overclocked to 4.8GHz and there is a mild overclock on the graphics card. I've included a couple of screenshots during the in-game benchmark, which shows the low GPU/high CPU usage. I don't have any processes that could be getting in the way, such as chrome or an AV. What's going on?2141849110_ShadowoftheTombRaiderScreenshot2019_09.22-14_04_08_86.thumb.png.9b993c5167c8f732926c13e1cdfd02bd.png649778504_ShadowoftheTombRaiderScreenshot2019_09.22-14_03_01_68.thumb.png.b61a2fd319c7951efa4330072bc99ef3.png

That's just the limit of your CPU, what's your monitor resolution/refresh rate?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Game from 2018 uses 6 threads to "do stuff", what's so weird about it ?
Unless you see low FPS (<30FPS), you don't need to bother yourself with what is faster than what.
IF you are bothered by it, you can only throw DSR or increase graphics detail to force GPU into working harder, BUT, it will limit FPS you do see (not sure if you need extra FPS at this point).

PS. High FPS (60FPS+), usually likes fast RAM.

I kinda figured it was.

Monitor is a PG279Q (1440p, 165HZ). The CPU was previously OC'd to 5GHz, but I was running into stability issues here and there, so I bumped it down a bit. Normally I run at 1440p, but after noticing a few issues I began running some benchmarks at 1080p to get a better idea of whether or not I had an issue with the CPU.
