Hey! I am planning to upgrade i5-9400f GTX 1060 6gb to a i7-8700k RTX 2070 and was wondering if 400w would be enough. I currently use 400w for the i5-9400f GTX 1060 6gb. The wattage calculator said that I'd need 484 but I have seen similar posts saying that it massively overestimates. Help would be appreciated.

Specs are:
Prime H310M-K RD2.0
i5-9400F
Intel Stock CPU Cooler
MSI GTX 1060 6GB
16GB RAM
x64 Bit

Hard to say, since you haven't told us which PSU you have. Not sure if you'd want to run an unlocked 8700K on such a terrible motherboard without VRM heatsinks either.

yo bruh chill i jus want help not for you to crap on me motherboard

I agree tho.. that board with a 8700K .. that’s gonna throttle somewhere, especially having no VRM heatsinks.. don’t think you’ll be able to run the 5ghz OC.

as to your psu.. it’s a firebrick. Get something like a corsair TXM 550 or Rmx 550

@OzzoCore the H310 chipset doesn't even allow for overclocking K processors, so choosing an unlocked CPU for it is baffling at the least.

Okay so say I choose the i7-8700, would that function

Well just like seon and others said, the measly VRM on that motherboard (no heatsinks, and 4 phases?) was absolutely not made for high power processors, and your very very poor PSU may not only make more problems on its own, it may also amplify the badness of the VRM by feeding it with sloppy voltage.

So I'm getting a new PSU and now I need a completely new motherboard?

Unfortunately this is what happens when trying to upgrade a system that wasnt originally built with upgrades in mind.

Technically speaking you dont 'NEED' a new motherboard and PSU... but its very VERY highly recommended.

Ok do you think the Asus B360 would be good and I'm sorry about the PSU it was the wrong link, the PSU is actually a Cooler Master MWE 400W Power Supply Unit.

PSU is fine then.

You can check here for a recommended tier list of PSU's

The B360 still wont be good for OCing but its fine for locked chips.

Oh ok :) Would it support a locked I9 of any type?

From what i can see, their 'Prime' b360 boards do not officially support i9's, but their 'Strix' B360 boards do.

The only locked i9 btw is the i9 9900.

400w for 8700k + 2070... I’d play it safe and get a higher quality 550w unit like txm/RMx or similars.

Well.. yeah but if you are going for a 8700k and 2070... and doing the mobo upgrade..

you might want to go with a 3600 + B450 motherboard like the tomahawk max.
