Is crowdfunding a gaming PC frowned upon in the gaming community? I'm planning to do so since I'm an aspiring esports athlete who grinds long hours every single day. (10-14) My laptop is old and is about to give up on me due to overuse. I don't want to halt at pursuing my dream when my laptop does eventually die inevitably. I am a high school drop out who practices full-time.

I don't know how many people would actually fund it, but you could always enter in a competition such as this one:

Edit: At least that is the repeated pattern I have seen.

I've read some of the gaming pc entries on gofundme and all of them have been for petty reasons. I think mine is legitimate.

How about, stay with me for a second, you get a job instead on ebegging of forums? We're not rich here - everyone works for their stuff and we don't exactly have excessive wealth to give around.

So about that infamy I was talking about...

To you, yes... to others, NO.

You'd be better off finding a part-time job... or if you can prove that you are a great gamer and might make something of yourself that way, ask for sponsorship.

I try not to comment when there isn't any more to add, but the way you phrased this worries me.

It sounds like instead of trying to do something to get to where you want to be, you're phrasing it in a way that makes it seem like you're entitled to something.

That is the part that will get your efforts shot down before they even leave the ground.

At least if you said something like "I've been working super hard to save, but am still really far from reaching my goal" that is one thing.

The lack of any responsibility is almost scary.

I hope things work out for you in a way that will align your priorities properly, but as it stands your rationale is a bit worrisome.

Hell, if you can already grind for 10-14 hours a day that's the biggest step in making money!  No go out and apply that dedication to tha grind to literally any paying job, and you could have a PC in a mere few days

Assuming you're a US citizen, let's say you can make $7 an hour minimum with some kind of basic job, and that you'd be scrounging 8 hour shifts

8x$7 = $56, but we'll round up to $60 a day for convenience.  If we make a simple extrapolation, in a mere 10 days (a standard 2 week pay period will have 10 days on/4 off) you'll have $600! That's enough for a respectable entry level gaming machine, and if you saved for an additional pay period, guess what?  $1200 is a midrange PC building sweetspot

Going to toss an edit in here - taxes may be deductucted based on region, although this income bracket is unlikely to be impacted.  Minimum wage is also highly variable, going from much less to much more than what was used in this demo

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

With respect to funders, provide some benefits or outreach information that'll help them feel justified..

Think of the person your asking..............and them reading your phrases...

Why would they? (Reasons are not good enough, standard teenage stuff)

What are you offering? (After the fact or during, what benefit outside of feeling good about funding your full time unemployed self (common already)

*You know you don't have to stop dreaming about things you cannot afford... they are usually the driving force for you to Work Harder, and give more of yourself to the cause...for your intended longterm/shorterm benefits.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Try streaming some of that practice, if you're good you may get some money out of it. Or participate in tournaments - that's where the money is in esports... if you plan on doing this professionally you'd better find a way to get paid. Even the best pc in the world isn't going to pay your bills otherwise.

By the way, ebay is a great place to get decent hardware for a great price. If you need help with finding something decent you can make another thread, just list your budget and location.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Check out Reddit for the best deals on used hardware and build something from that.

Honestly though, go back and finish high school. Your eSports skills aren't going to be with you forever and as you age you will rapidly be outpaced by younger people with better reflexes. Where does that leave you? It's not exactly a transferable skill. Finish high school and go into a trade.

Yes it’s frowned upon. Go get a job and get your own pc.

So basically you've got nothing useful at all to do with your time. This means that you could get a basic job, maybe 6 hours a week, which would earn you maybe 200-300 dollars a month or so, so you'd have a very capable esports pc in about half a year. Double that to 12 hours a week and you'd have the pc in 3 months, whilst still having copious amounts of time for "practice".

Do I recommend the plan mentioned above? No; if I were you I'd go back to school as well. Go to school now that you still can. Not only is an esports career probably not as glorious as you imagine, the odds of it happening are really small too; if school and esports practice were lotteries, I'd get a school ticket. (though the prize may seem small at first, you'll realise it was all worth it when you win it in the end)

I'm sorry, but begging for gaming PC is petty reason to begin with. If you are good at what you do, you can get into academy level. At that point, if you/team is winning something, you start to gain both price money and sponsorships.

As you don't need anything new, or super-powerful to just be esport player (HD and 120fps at low detail is enough), getting budget used rig should be your target. If you have determination (which begging isn't), you can save up money for that in a year. And if you are well located, there might be some treasures to be found, like some institution getting rid of their old machines.

I can't imagine gaining any real traction given that it's not a verifiable matter of fact that you'll be able to make anything of yourself, regardless of whether or not you can put in the hours (having time doesn't mean you'll get good, I promise). Not a lot of people realize this before chasing the idea, but there's more to being an esports player than just putting in hours. The way I see it, you have to be an extraordinarily talented player before ever deciding to take the plunge into a competitive scene. And by extraordinarily talented, I mean, I'm a Grandmaster/Top 500 Overwatch player and I have absolutely no confidence in going pro, so you have to be better than that.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

i sure hope you are reading all this, because you seriously need to take in some of this.

WHY should ANYONE fund you? you dont even have that down. You didnt link a profile to anything, your name isnt known, you didnt even MENTION what games you are so darn good at.

at the moment you have NOTHING to your name, there is NOTHING in return, people want to know they invested in something at least.

Instead you sound entitled to a good computer because you play games more than you sleep

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)
