[Discussion] What are your thoughts on ruggedized electronics?

Does anyone on this forum own any ruggedized electronics?

As we all know, rugged devices tend to have lower specs than what I would assume most of you have, but is anyone else here an exception like me?

Disclaimer: I have a high spec gaming desktop but I love ruggedized electronics and have made a living off of refurbishing & reselling them for the past 3 years!

We use some ruggedized electronics at work - mostly just portable IP Phones, like the Panasonic KX-UDT131.

Ruggedized doesn't inherently mean it has to have lower specifications - it just happens that normally an environment that requires rugged electronics often doesn't require them to be high end.

I don't personally but we have a fair few at work.

I mean, the iPhones alone - which aren't ruggedized, I must get them back in at a rate of around 4 a month with smashed screens

In all of my years of work with them I've never came across a laptop with a fan, which is often required for higher end processors.

I doubt you're getting proper true mobile workstations in there (no 6-core 12-thread, etc) - but you can get them with i5's, for example. That's not super high end, but it's certainly not barebones either.

There are plenty of actively cooled models where the fans are insulated from the rest of the components so that it remains waterproof. The reason you don't see high heat parts is battery life.

Many of us are already putting those big bulky ruggedized cases on our phones to make sure they don't break if we drop them...

I'd rather have a rugged phone from the get go, at least it would be slightly thinner than a regular phone + rugged case.

Yeah, I understand it. I would never buy one but I can understand why people do.

Though I do wish that companies put a little more care into the durability of consumer devices. Thinkpads have been doing it for a while, but nobody else does.

My Dad and sister seriously need to consider ruggedized devices (I replaced the display on Dad's Honor 6x three times), particularly with wireless charging. They leave a trail of broken devices in their wake. Neitger of them are able to afford such a device however.

My camera lens sees the present…
