Currently building a ryzen apu system and i got a m.2 sata ssd for it.

I have the Gigabyte b450m ds3h motherboard and a 500GB WD Blue Sata SSD

It is not detected in bios. I updated bios to latest version and it still doesn't detect it.

I tried booting with a random 2.5" ssd i had lying around and it did work.

What could be the issue?

Could be that you received a bad drive, do you have another system you can test it in?

I have a pc that doesnt support m.2

I have a laptop that might support m.2 I'll check there.

How common is it for m.2 sata drives to be broken on arrival?

Depending on brand/quality it can happen, it's actually a lot more common than people think to receive DOA computer parts.

this is news to me. I've bought a few parts in my life and even used and they have always been in good working condition.

I bought the western digital drive from amazon directly so it shouldn't be dodgy stock.

I work in a computer repair shop we build and service PC's and Mac's, I build probably 4 or 5 computers a week  and have been for the last 5 years and even buying from Amazon or newegg and even super reputable brands I've had items show up defective or DOA. Just last week we got a bad stock of HP M.2 Nvme drives, 3 out of 5 died in less than a week and the previous week I got a 3200mhz kit of Corsair LPX DDR4 that was shot to crap. Typically it's a pretty low chance for someone occasionally ordering parts over the years but when you buy 4 or more computers worth of parts a week you have more of a chance of receiving a bad part.

Just checked the m.2 ssd on my laptop it works. That's not the issue.

Is the motherboard's M.2 slot faulty?

Possibly, there are a few people that have received DS3Hs with faulty M.2 slots. In the bios settings make sure that Nvme drives are enabled and that your Sata mode is in AHCI and not Raid or any of the other options. You can also try disabling CSM, Secure Boot, and Fast Boot.
