My question is, why are you trying to use Kali?

 

Kali is a very specifically targeted distro, and I have a feeling you've no need for Kali if you're not sure how to upgrade RAM in a laptop. Before I know what you intend to use, what is a pen test OS first and foremost, I don't want to get more involved.
