Hey guys so if I have a 144hz monitor and im playing a game and my frames go from 60 to 80 is it better to cap my fps at something I will always be above or should I let my fps go higher. I notice that at lower fps there is a considerable amount of input lag and the game does not look as smooth. I was thinking that capping it would me consistent frame times but i dont really know what would look better and feel the best.

What gear you got ?  What resolution you play and settings.  You have a 144hz monitor then you want pretty much have a frame rate of 120 to 144fps for optimal experience.

Asus Sabertooth x79 / 4930k @ 4500 @ 1.408v / Gigabyte WF 2080 RTX / Corsair VG 64GB @ 1866 & AX1600i & H115i Pro @ 2x Noctua NF-A14 / Carbide 330r Blackout

Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface / KRK Rokits 10" / Sennheiser HD 650 / Logitech G Pro Wireless Mouse & G915 Linear & G935 & C920 / SL 88 Grand / Cakewalk / NF-A14 Int P12 Ex
AOC 40" 4k Curved / LG 55" OLED C9 120hz / LaCie Porsche Design 2TB & 500GB / Samsung 950 Pro 500GB / 850 Pro 500GB / Crucial m4 500GB / Asus M.2 Card

Ok good 1080p you get your 144fps for AAA titles.  Honestly if I had your monitor I would not dare cap, unless I cap it at 144fps.  Also freesync and pay-sync are so when your frame rate dips below Hz it still keeps the action smooth and what not.

Yes, thats a very demanding effect. Just play around with settings so that you can properly utilize the panel

I find AA to be very helpful.

OP:

I'd reccommend 4x MSAA, turn down shadows one or two notches, and hair to 1 or 2 below max, and you should turn down render distances a bit in open world games, and turn down particles one or two notches, you should be able to get 100fps+ on 99% of games.

I cap my framerate at my refresh rate, no point in going higher.

I then optimize all my game settings to always run at that framerate.
