Hey there,

I just got my new RBP 17 2070 today. So far I configured Windows, updated bios to 1.04, updated Drivers and ran Firestrike (17047). No dead pixles and only minor coil whine. But i noticed a short scratching noise as soon as the fans start to rotate from 0 rpm (really bugging). Reproducable every time. Sounds like an very old HDD. I unscrewed the back plate and checked if the fans are some kind of stuck or scratching against the housing. But all 4 fans can be spinned freely and without any friction or sound by hand. And at full fan speed there are no weird sounds from the fans either, running totally normal. I dont know if this sound is the fans itself or any kind of electrical noise. Very strange. Never had anything similar on my older Laptops from different brands.

Anyone knows this? Suggestions? Send it back?

Thanks for any Input!

Send it back while you can. If it really bugs you, you certainly don't want to be stuck with it. If you send it back and get another one and it does the same, at least you know it probably isn't something defective.

It's possible that the fans are rubbing against something, scratching it and wearing the fans in the process.

That was my first thought but I opened the backplate and was able to turn all fans by hand without any noise, resistance or scratching...so I assume its more electrical related?!

Thanks for the input. If I knew it is normal to that laptop ok, I can live with that. But by now thats the only flaw I spotted on the Razer laptop and there are many things that can go wrong on those. Its kind of lottery.

Maybe something somewhere else in it, like a ribbon cable, being blown by the fan? If you have a compressor, might trying blowing around the inside. (Just be careful not to spin the fan with it).

This is the noise: https://insider.razer.com/index.php?threads/new-rbp-17-short-scratching-noise-when-the-fans-starts.51946/#post-502299
